September in Tenerife — Warm weather, thinning crowds, the w**e harvest, and two of the island’s oldest traditions. Here’s what’s worth planning your trip to Tenerife in September around 👉
🍇 It’s vendimia — the w**e harvest — across the north. In the volcanic vineyards of La Orotava, Tacoronte and El Sauzal, the grapes are picked and the year’s w**e is made. It’s a good time to see Tenerife’s w**e country at work. The new w**e comes later, sold in the guachinches — informal, family-run eateries that serve their own w**e with simple Canarian home cooking.
⛪ Bajada de la Virgen del Socorro — Güímar, 7 September. One of the oldest pilgrimage in the Canary Islands: thousands walk overnight from Güímar down to the coast at El Socorro to honour the Virgin. One of the most authentic traditions in Tenerife.
September is one of the best time to visit Tenerife. The peak-summer crowds thin out after August, so the beaches are calmer, the trails quieter, and tables, car hire and stays are easier to find — often cheaper too. The weather stays warm and sunny: summer, without the crush.
🎆 Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna — 7–14 September in the UNESCO old town of La Laguna. People come from across the island for the processions, the crafts and food, and a huge fireworks display over the plaza on the final night.
🥾 Hiking in Tenerife is far better now than in peak summer. The heat eases off, so climbing Teide is more comfortable, and the trails of Anaga’s laurel forest and the Masca gorge are quieter. Cooler air, clear skies and fewer people on the path.
