Malta Digital Nomad Visa Requirements for Bangladeshis (My Practical Guide)

When I was researching the Malta Digital Nomad Visa (Nomad Residence Permit), I didn’t find many clear, Bangladesh-specific guides. So I’m writing this to help anyone who wants to apply from Bangladesh with a realistic, experience-based understanding of the process.

Everything below is based on:
1. My personal application journey (Oct 2023 → Malta)
2. Updated requirements from Residency Malta (2024–2025)
3. Practical tips, mistakes to avoid, and steps that actually matter

1. Basic Eligibility for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa:
o Work remotely for a foreign company
o OR be a freelancer working with non-Malta clients
o OR run a business registered outside Malta

The required income is €3,500/month for a single applicant (previously €2,700 when I applied). I applied as a remote employee for a US-based IT company (BuzzGeek, LLC), which fully met the criteria.

2. Documents You Need (Bangladesh → Malta): Here’s everything I used, plus what is required now

✔ Identity & Employment
o Your valid passport
o Employment letter or Contract
o Confirmation that your job is fully remote

✔ Financial Proof: When I applied, 3 months were enough — but now I strongly recommend:
o 6 months bank statements
o Remittance certificate
o Payslip

✔ Health Insurance: Not needed before Principal Approval.
o After PA, I bought health insurance from Atlas (Malta).
o You can choose any international plan as long as it covers Malta.

✔ Police Clearance: When I applied, this wasn’t mandatory.
o Now it is required for adults.
Tip: Get it legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Bangladesh.

✔ Accommodation Proof: Not needed at the start.
o After PA, you must submit a: Minimum 30-day hotel or Airbnb booking (We submitted an Airbnb reservation)

✔ Other Documents
o Letter of Intent

📌 Official links you should check:
o Application portal: https://portal.residencymalta.gov.mt/landing
o FAQs: https://nomad.residencymalta.gov.mt/new-faqs/
o Checklist: https://nomad.residencymalta.gov.mt/checklist/

3. The Application Process (Simple Version): There are 2 stages:
i. Principal Approval
ii. Final Approval

Here’s how it worked for me.

STEP 1: Document Preparation
I started in October 2023
Took about 2–3 weeks to gather everything
Submitted the application on Nov 15, 2023
Now you’ll submit everything through their online portal.

STEP 2: Principal Approval (PA)
This is the first approval step.
I received: Principal Approval on January 20
Final Approval just two days later (Jan 22)
Most applicants receive PA in 4–8 weeks.
After PA, you must submit:

o 30-day hotel/Airbnb booking
o Health insurance coverage

STEP 3: Final Approval (FA)
Once your additional documents are verified, you receive Final Approval.

After FA, you must submit your full document set again to VFS Dhaka along with:
o Flight booking
o Passport
o VFS service fees

My experience at VFS: Both my wife and I were called for an interview.
The questions were basic:
o Why Malta?
o What do you do?
o Job role and responsibilities
Nothing stressful.

STEP 4: Visa Issuance & Travel
o From document submission to VFS → visa issuance took around 2 months.
o You have 90 days from Final Approval to enter Malta.

STEP 5: After Arrival in Malta
o After arriving: You must find a rental home and submit your rental contract
o Then you’ll give biometrics at Residency Malta
I received my residence card in about 12 days

4. Costs (What I Actually Paid)
o Malta application fee: €300 per person
o VFS Dhaka fee: €250 per person
o Health insurance: €465 for 2 people (now higher)
o Flight: 1.6 lakh BDT each
o Airbnb (30 days): $1,260
o Long-term rental move-in: €2,250 upfront (details below)
Long-term rental costs normally include: First month’s rent + One month’s security deposit + Half month’s rent as agency fee

5. Renting a Home in Malta (What No One Tells You): Finding housing in Malta is honestly the hardest part.
Here’s the reality:
o There are lots of scams, especially on Facebook
o Many listings look real but will ask for advance payment
o Agencies vary widely in reliability
o We ended up visiting many real estate offices in person before finding a place

My advice:
✔ Don’t pay anything before seeing the property
✔ Avoid random Facebook offers
✔ Use established real estate offices
✔ Expect to pay 2–2.5 months equivalent upfront

6. After Arrival — Settling in Malta
✔ Residence Card: Received in ~12 days.
✔ SIM Card: We bought prepaid SIMs from GO (Cheaper at local shops — airport prices are higher)
✔ Public Transport (Tallinja Card): Applied on arrival day → got it in 6 days
Cost: €25 (Buses are free (except TD/direct routes))

✔ Bank Account: Used Revolut.

Final Thoughts
The Malta Digital Nomad Visa is one of the most achievable visas for Bangladeshi remote workers. The two-stage process (Principal Approval → Final Approval) makes it low-risk, and if your documents are clean and your income is stable, the process is surprisingly straightforward.

If you ever dreamed of living abroad or becoming a digital nomad, I hope our story shows you that it’s possible — even from Bangladesh. I and my wife are sharing our full journey in parts.

Here is Part 1: Our move from Bangladesh to Malta.

Our Journey Begins — Leaving Bangladesh for Malta as Digital Nomads

Leaving home is never easy. But for us — a couple living a simple, peaceful life in Uttara, Dhaka — the decision to start a new life abroad was something we had been dreaming about for years.

I grew up in Pabna, later moved to Dhaka with my wife, and lived the very typical Bangladeshi lifestyle: family, work, routine, and responsibilities. Professionally, I was already working remotely as a Chief Digital Strategist for a US company, which eventually became the foundation that made our digital nomad journey possible.

But our story didn’t begin with excitement — it began with uncertainty.

Why We Decided to Leave Bangladesh
Back in 2020, during the political unrest and rising safety concerns, we first started thinking about leaving. We wanted a safer life, a calmer environment, and better opportunities — not just for work, but for our future as a family.

But at that time, leaving Bangladesh wasn’t easy.
If you didn’t have a student visa or a work permit abroad, the doors were mostly closed.

Then we discovered something new:
The Digital Nomad Visa — a concept first launched by Estonia in 2020.

It sounded perfect… but also very risky.

No one we knew in Bangladesh had ever applied for a Digital Nomad Visa. We didn’t know a single person who tried it.
We didn’t know if the embassy would even understand the application.
We didn’t know if we were wasting time — or worse, wasting money.

But we decided to try.

🌍 Choosing Malta — The First Step of Our New Life
We filtered our options to three:

1. Portugal
2. Spain
3. Malta

Portugal required a 12-month advance rental agreement — something almost impossible to arrange from Bangladesh.
Spain didn’t respond to our emails or inquiries about the DN visa from Bangladesh.

Then came Malta.
✔ Easy application
✔ No rental agreement needed
✔ Small processing fee (€300 per applicant)
✔ Helpful communication
✔ English-speaking Mediterranean island
✔ Safe and beautiful

It felt like the right choice — the perfect mix of practicality, beauty, and opportunity.

And so in March 2024, after years of thinking, waiting, and delaying because of COVID…
we finally took the leap.

✈️ The Flight — and the Funny Twist
We applied for the visa with Turkish Airlines bookings, assuming an approximate flight date. And the most unbelievable thing happened:

Our visa got approved on the exact day of our scheduled flight.

So we had to shift the flight 2 weeks later…
Then again, after approval, we moved it forward by 1 week because we just couldn’t wait to begin our new life.

The journey with Turkish Airlines was fantastic. Istanbul Airport’s iGA Lounge blew our minds — huge, modern, full of food and comfort. Thanks to a privilege on my credit card, we enjoyed it for free.

But Malta welcomed us in its own dramatic way.

As we approached the island, the plane touched the runway for literally 1 second… then shot back up into the sky.
Bad weather.

The captain calmly announced, “We’ll try again.”

On the second attempt — we officially landed in Malta.

This was it.

🛂 First Moments — A Friendly Welcome
Immigration was surprisingly smooth. The officer was friendly, smiling, and had a great sense of humor.

We mentioned we booked an Airbnb in Bugibba, but I accidentally pronounced it as “Bugibaba.”
He burst out laughing and repeated it back to us:

“Enjoy your stay in Bigibaba!”

That laugh eased so much of our tension.
That moment felt like a warm welcome — as if Malta was saying, “Relax, you’re going to love it here.”

🏘️ Struggles — Our First Real Challenge
Transport was easy — free bus service with a simple application. (We will share details in later part of our journey story)

But housing?
That was the real battle.

We had only one month to find a home before our Airbnb ran out.
We visited 10+ real estate agencies, checked dozens of apartments, and our budget made it even harder.

Just when things felt impossible…

We found it.

A beautiful duplex penthouse in San Pawl, just by the beach.
Bright, airy, peaceful — it felt like our first real home outside Bangladesh.

That day felt like a victory.

🌙 A Beautiful Beginning — Eid in Malta
And the most memorable moment?

We received our residency permits on Eid-ul-Fitr.
A symbolic sign.
A reminder that we were starting a new chapter… together.

From Bangladesh to Malta — our journey had officially begun.
