The Spanish imperial eagle almost disappeared a few decades ago due to habitat loss, accidental poisonings and electrocution on power lines. Only 30 pairs of birds remained on Earth in the 1960s. Conservation efforts helped raise that number to 253 pairs in 2008 and then to 283 pairs in May 2011, when the first eagle chick born through artificial insemination was hatched at the Center for the Study of Iberian Raptors in Sevilleja de la Jara, Spain.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6jo5dMLmwnQ

Cabo de Gata N.P. (Almeria) is one of our favorites destination. We have spent few days birding over there. As usual, we have seen a lot of Greater Flamingo ( Phoenicopterus ruber) at the salt marsh.

The UN only provides this label to territories which have met three main requirements: They have great ecosystem diversity, they are important for the conservation of global biological diversity, and that the territory has room to expand, as well as provide a working template for its surrounding areas to draw from. In Spain you will find the biggest concentration in the world of theses protected areas!

Best time for Outdoor Activities
Spain’s nearly 2,500 miles of coastline entice visitors to enjoy sailing, swimming and surfing, among other beach activities. As weather on the Mediterranean and southern coasts is still pleasant and crowds are thinner, May through June or September are ideal for visiting this areas. March through September is usually an excellent time for mountain biking or hiking along the trails found in the Pyrenees, Cantabrian Mountains, Picos de Europa or Sierra de Grazalema National Park. Skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes in these mountainous regions around December, after the first snowstorm of the year.
