Field to Fiber: Cotton on the Costa Chica 🌿

In the Costa Chica of Oaxaca, cotton still grows in the colors nature gave it — coyuchi brown, green, red, white. Heirloom seeds, passed down for generations, now threatened by GMO contamination.

Join us January 3-9 2027 as we walk the fields with Ñu’u Ndito, a cooperative protecting these native cottons at the source, and sit with the Katyi Ya’a collective to learn the full transformation — deseeding, spinning on the malacate, weaving on the backstrap loom. From plant to thread to textile to identity.

This trip is a fundraiser. Every reservation supports Ñu’u Ndito’s work to clean and preserve GMO-free heirloom seeds, so this fiber and the knowledge around it can be passed on.

A note: this isn’t a luxury trip in the usual sense. Accommodations and meals are simple and shared, days are humid and offline, and the reward is something rarer — real proximity to the people safeguarding one of Mexico’s great biocultural treasures.

Crafts of Okinawa 🌺

Okinawa isn’t quite like the rest of Japan — separated from the mainland for centuries, its craft traditions grew their own way: pottery, indigo, weaving, silverwork, each shaped by island life and the Ryukyu Islands’ long history of both isolation and exchange.

This trip takes a small group deep into that world, hosted by Yuka Makino, a hand spinner and weaver who tends naturally colored cotton and indigo, and who returned to Okinawa after fifteen years away to relearn its fiber traditions from the ground up.

Over a week, we’ll: -Harvest shell ginger and turn the fiber into cordage and a handwoven purse -Visit Shuri Castle to learn the history behind traditional Okinawan hairstyles and kimono -Watch silver hairpins take shape in a traditional silver studio -Travel to Ogimi, home of bashōfu, to harvest banana fiber and hand-spin it into thread -Explore Yachimun Village and its community kiln -Dye tenugui using natural indigo and Fukugi -Weave our own bashōfu coaster with the thread we made, at a women’s weaving co-op in Ogimi

We’ll stay at a beachfront hotel in Kunigami, on Okinawa’s quiet northern coast — days in the workshop, evenings by the water.

“Women of the Scottish & Irish coasts. The textures of cloth and baskets, the iconic silhouettes, the hard work and the gentleness combined. The ladies in the striped skirts are of course the Fisherrow Fishwives of Musselburgh (Edinburgh). They were an incredible community of women that worked long, labor intensive hours preparing and selling fish in Edinburgh. I’m a little obsessed with their culture. Unusually for their time, they handled the money for the household, they also had football (soccer) teams where the married women would play the unmarried (apparently the married invariably won), they also loved to sing together and had their own choir. Their men did the fishing, but the boats were named after the fishwives. They also knit an iconic style of sweater known as a “gansey”, which were made throughout the fishing communities at the time, each village with its own style.”

Our Peru trip through the kind and curious eyes of

Luvia participated in the trip last July as part of our Artisan Exchange Program. It was a privilege to host her, to introduce her to Pumaq Wasin, Juan, Elena and our other partners in Peru. To continue to bridge worlds of beauty and shared learning. Gracias Luvia. ❤️

We’ve just added another set of Peru trip dates for this August. We hope some of you are able to join us on this special experience.

ONE SPACE (!) has just opened to join us in Ladakh this August.

This 10 day trip is for the person who appreciates raw and rugged beauty, who is comfortable camping for two nights in the cold if it means being able to hike with nomadic shepherds and their yak. The person who wants to spend slow days at the gorgeous studio, patiently attuning to the pace of creativity as we spin, dye and weave with native fibers.

And even more special… during this trip we’ll be inviting two of our partners from Kutch, India to attend as participants, as part of our Artisan Exchange Program. An opportunity for further learning and cultural exchange for our whole group. ✨

A week in northern Morocco looks like this: earthen clay under your fingernails, bread still warm from the oven, mountain air moving through the studio, winding medina streets, shared meals, woven textures, and the generous presence of artisans who have shaped these traditions over lifetimes.

Our Morocco journey is an invitation to slow down and learn through making — from ceramics with Mama Aïcha in the Rif Mountains to weaving in Fez, all held within the beauty and depth of this remarkable region.�

Meet the Waqxaqi’kan cooperative, a group of indigenous Kaqchikel women living in the remote Guatemalan highlands. They specialize in jaspe (ikat weaving) and working with ixcaco, an heirloom cotton with a natural brown color.
They cooperative formed in 1982, as a way to support one another in response to the country’s civil war. Together, they create exquisite textiles, and also support each other as a family.

We have been partnering with the Waqxaqi’kan cooperative since our very first trip in 2015, sharing meals, watching their children grow, and of course admiring beautiful textiles together. Here, our groups learn an overview of backstrap weaving while having the opportunity to try spinning heirloom cotton.

Registration is currently open to join us this October in Guatemala.
