Did you know… Porto’s wine cellars sit across the river for historical tax reasons? 🍷

Although Porto wine carries the city’s name, most of the famous cellars are actually located across the Douro River, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Centuries ago, this area offered cooler conditions for aging wine and, just as important, lower taxes than the city of Porto itself.

Wine barrels were traditionally transported down the river on wooden boats called rabelos, creating one of the most iconic scenes of northern Portugal.

Today, these historic cellars are open to visitors, offering tastings, river views, and a deep dive into the story behind one of Portugal’s most famous exports.
