Important Notice for Tourists in Playa de Palma: Fines Now Apply for Buying from Street Vendors
As the official fanpage for Playa de Palma Mallorca, we want to inform all visitors clearly and directly about a new city regulation that may affect your holiday experience.
The city council of Palma de Mallorca has passed a new ordinance aimed at cracking down on illegal street vending—and for the first time, this includes punishing buyers, not just the sellers. Known locally as “Helmut” vendors, these unlicensed sellers are a familiar sight, especially along the Schinkenstraße and other busy tourist areas at Playa de Palma.
What’s new?
Starting Friday, following official publication in the city’s law gazette, anyone caught buying counterfeit or unlicensed goods on the street can be fined up to €750. This includes sunglasses, handbags, drinks, food, and even unauthorized pharmaceutical products like Vi**ra, which was recently seized by police from a street vendor in Arenal.
According to the regulation:
“It is forbidden to purchase any kind of goods in public spaces from unauthorized street vendors. Buyers are exempt only if the purchase occurs at officially licensed markets.”
What does this mean for you?
Do not purchase anything from street vendors operating on sidewalks or beaches, no matter how cheap or tempting it seems.
Look for official markets or licensed stalls if you want to buy local souvenirs or snacks.
Be especially cautious near high-traffic areas like the Sant Miquel pedestrian zone in Palma or the beachfront at Playa de Palma.
Transition Period
For the first 2–3 weeks, the city plans to focus on education rather than punishment, especially for international tourists who may not be aware of the new law. However, fines will still be issued if necessary.
Why this is important
The regulation is designed not only to protect local businesses but also to combat the increasing presence of unregulated and often unsafe products sold on the street. From counterfeit sunglasses to unapproved medication, the risks are real—not just legally, but also for your health and safety.
Final Note
We encourage all visitors to support licensed local businesses,
