What’s actually in the air when calima reaches the Canary Islands?

AirCanLab researchers analysed airborne particles collected between 2024 and 2026. Saharan dust caused the biggest spikes in particle concentrations, but the study also identified industrial pollution arriving from Morocco and Algeria.

During one episode on 31 March 2026, readings in southern Tenerife and La Gomera reached 996 micrograms per cubic metre.

The findings help distinguish desert dust from traffic emissions, sea salt and pollution carried from elsewhere.

That’s the comparison behind the El Hierro report, highlighting the scale of the reception challenge faced by one of the Canary Islands’ smallest communities.

These are historical arrival estimates, not a 2026 total or a count of people who settled on the island. Arrivals are generally transferred onward after initial reception.

A 56-year-old woman was rescued after the quad bike she was travelling on left the TF-38 and fell down a steep drop in Guía de Isora.

Emergency services were alerted at 6:15pm on Wednesday, 14 October. Firefighters helped bring her to safety before ambulance crews transferred her to Hospital del Sur.

Her injuries were described as moderate during the initial assessment. No further update on her condition was provided in the report.

Another court setback, but the Cabildo isn’t giving up on Tenerife’s motor circuit. 🏁

The island council plans to seek a fresh environmental impact declaration for the Granadilla de Abona project after a ruling found that the previous approval had expired.

It will stop pursuing further Supreme Court appeals in this dispute and withdraw those already lodged. Its legal team is also assessing the consequences for the construction contract.

The project still needs fresh environmental approval.

Planning a Teide hike? Check your route before you go. 🥾🌋

Updated rules cover three trails: PNT 09 Teide–Pico Viejo–Mirador de Las Narices del Teide, PNT 23 Los Regatones Negros and PNT 28 Chafarí.

Together, they have 225 daily places. Access remains free, but advance authorisation through Tenerife ON and the required mountain equipment are compulsory.

A reservation alone won’t guarantee entry if you’re missing the necessary kit. Check current trail conditions before travelling.

New beach rules have been approved in La Laguna. 🌊🚭

Smoking, camping, overnight stays and speakers that disturb other visitors are covered by the restrictions at municipal beaches and natural swimming pools.

Affected spots include Bajamar, Jover, La Barranquera and El Arenisco in Punta del Hidalgo. The rules also prohibit littering and using soap or shampoo in public showers and bathing areas.

These are La Laguna’s municipal rules, not a ban across every beach in Tenerife.

A man has been arrested in El Puertito de Adeje on suspicion of setting fire to a dog.

Local Police responded to a suspicious fire in the early hours of 8 October. The Guardia Civil is investigating, and a specialist post-mortem will establish the precise cause of the animal’s death.

In a wider animal welfare investigation in the area, six other dogs showing signs of mistreatment have been rescued and given veterinary care.

The allegations against the arrested man have not been proven in court.

Another delay for the Los Cristianos seafront renovation. 🌴

Work on almost one kilometre of the Las Vistas promenade is now expected to begin sometime in 2027, subject to the outstanding permissions.

Arona Council and the Tenerife Cabildo have completed their administrative procedures, but authorisation from COSTAS is still pending. There’s no confirmed construction start date.

The project aims to improve accessibility, landscaping and public facilities along this busy coastal route.

Santa Claus is coming to Santa Cruz! 🎅✨

The capital will host its first dedicated Father Christmas parade on 24 December 2026, adding something new for families spending Christmas in Tenerife.

The route and starting time haven’t been announced yet. Christmas lights are scheduled to switch on on 19 November, kicking off the city’s festive programme.
