(1)

This region on the north coast of Spain keeps within its bit more than 5000 square kilometres a total of 37 nature reserves and a whole historic and artistic catalogue, where the prehistoric and geologic cave heritage and the network of little museums placed all around the territory shine in their own light.

Cantabria, Land of Waves: Celebrate International Surfing Day Where It All Began.
The summer Arrives, the Sea Awakens, and Cantabria Has Something Special to Tell You. Every year, June brings with it one of the most celebrated events in the global surfing community: International Surfing Day. A day dedicated to honoring a sport that blends strength, balance, respect for the ocean, and a generous dose of adrenaline. And if there is one place in Spain where this occasion deserves to be celebrated in all its intensity, that place is Cantabria.

Here, surfing is not a trend. It is part of the coastline’s DNA. It was on Cantabria’s beaches that, in the early 1960s, a Santander native named Jesús Fiochi brought back from France some of the first surfboards ever seen riding the Atlantic waves. Since then, the Cantabrian Sea has shaped generations of surfers, hosted international competitions, and established this stretch of coastline as one of Europe’s most respected surfing destinations.

Today, we travel back to a time of visionary artists, dreamlike architects, and buildings capable of stirring emotions as though they were living works of art. A time when Cantabria fell under the spell of one of Europe’s most fascinating artistic movements: Art Nouveau.

Because when we think of Art Nouveau in Cantabria, one image inevitably comes to mind.
The impossible silhouette of Gaudí’s El Capricho in Comillas.
Its towers covered in ceramic tiles. Its green and golden sunflowers gleaming beneath the Cantabrian rain. Its curved forms in conversation with nature itself.

But Cantabria’s Art Nouveau legacy stretches far beyond that.
Today, in celebration of World Art Nouveau Day, we journey through an elegant and artistic Cantabria. A land where iron, stone, and ceramics were transformed into beauty.

A journey through seaside towns, casinos facing the sea, historic markets, and buildings that still seem to whisper stories from the past.

Welcome to a new episode of the Turismo Cantabria podcast — where landscapes are not only admired… they are tasted.

Today, we’re opening a different kind of door. This isn’t just a conversation about gastronomy, but about everything happening behind it. The hidden backstage where tradition and science come together to shape some of Cantabria’s most iconic flavours.

Because a sobao is far more than a sweet pastry.
A cheese is much more than transformed milk.
And orujo… is far more than a spirit.
They are living processes. They are landscape, heritage and history… but also chemistry 🎙️ https://cantabriaspain.co.uk/podcast/
