Is Ronda worth visiting in winter? Honestly it is our favourite time to bring people. Is there a suspension bridge in Gibraltar? There is, and after fifteen years taking people up the Rock it still gets the biggest gasp. The Windsor Bridge hangs across a gorge on the Upper Rock, the whole town and harbour dropped far below your feet, with Africa on the horizon on a clear day. From this viewpoint above Tarifa we point it out to every group. Can you see Africa from Spain? Yes, the Rif mountains of Morocco sit just 14 kilometres across the water, close enough that this lovely bunch could hardly believe it. Why does Nazaré get the biggest waves in the world? An underwater canyon just offshore funnels the Atlantic swell into walls of water that top 20 metres in winter. We caught the lighthouse fort at sunset, when the summer sea looks this calm, hard to picture the giants that arrive a few months later. It is one of our favourite spots on the whole coast. We can weave Nazaré into a tailor made trip through Portugal.

One of our favourite stops with guests is right down in the gorge, looking up. How tall is the Puente Nuevo in Ronda? It rises 98 metres from the river to the road, and from the bottom you get the full sweep of stone arching overhead, the view most people never see from the top. What is the white golf ball on top of the Rock of Gibraltar? Every group asks us on the way up. It is a radar station, keeping watch over one of the busiest sea lanes on the planet, and the Rock has been a lookout like this since Moorish times. Step through the door of the Convent of Christ in Tomar and you are inside the spiritual home of the Knights Templar. Are there Templar sites you can still visit in Portugal? This is the greatest of them, a round church built so knights could pray on horseback, every surface gilded and painted. When the order was dissolved they simply became the Order of Christ and carried on right here. Is there a suspension bridge in Gibraltar? Yes. The Windsor Bridge hangs across a deep gorge on the Upper Rock, 50 metres long and around 70 metres above the ground. Cross it and the whole town, port and bay open up beneath your feet. One more reason the Upper Rock is the highlight of any Gibraltar day!
