Spring in the region of the Penedès signals more than a seasonal shift; it marks the strategic restart of the vine’s annual cycle.

In March, vineyards awaken from winter dormancy as rising temperatures and spring rainfall activate the flow of sap. Buds formed the previous year begin to swell and burst, revealing the first green shoots. This early stage, known as budbreak, sets the foundation for the entire vintage.

By April and May, leaf growth accelerates. These first leaves are not just visual markers of growth; they are the engine of the vine, driving photosynthesis and shaping the balance of sugars and acids that will ultimately define the wine’s character.

Yet, this phase is as critical as it is fragile. Young shoots remain highly vulnerable to frost, making timing, observation, and vineyard management essential for safeguarding yield and quality.

A new cycle begins, full of potential, precision, and promise.

Three weeks ago, I was sitting in a WSET Level 1 classroom in Barcelona, tasting eight different wines, exploring the world’s key grape varieties, discovering classic regions, and learning the fundamentals of food and wine pairing. It was a deep dive into the structure, language, and intention behind what we so often simply enjoy in the glass.

Then the message came through - I passed!!

Grateful for the foundations, inspired by the stories behind every bottle, and excited to put this knowledge into practice, from vineyard to glass. This is just the beginning.

About 40km from both Barcelona and Tarragona lies a region that quietly brings everything together.

The Penedès is where vineyards meet the sea, where pine-covered hills roll into golden beaches, and where wine culture shapes everyday life. Within 20 minutes, you can move from a coastal terrace in Sitges to the organised vineyard plains of Alt Penedès, or north into Mediterranean forest scented with thyme and rosemary.

This is a territory of contrasts across Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, and Garraf. It is cava and gastronomy, fishermen’s villages and rural masías, human towers and harvest festivals.

After the Winter, the vineyard gradually begins its awakening, typically in March as temperatures begin to rise while still maintaining a refreshing coolness, allowing the vines to wake up slowly.

Just before the hectic school and work routine started again, we managed one more little escape to Sant Feliu de Guíxols earlier this month. Sant Feliu is situated on the Costa Brava and belongs to the region of Baix Emporda.

In addition to the beaches and coves surrounded by pine tree forests and the charm of being a seaside town, Sant Feliu de Guíxols stands out thanks to the wide range of sports on offer, its historic heritage (such as the Modernista architecture) and the prestigious International Music Festival of Porta Ferrada.

One day we endeavoured on a 2.5km walk along the Cami de Ronda to S'Agaro, Playa de St Pol and having done several ronda walks along the Costa Brava, I would say that this is one of the most beautiful ones.
What not to miss in Sant Feliu de Guíxols:

- Swim at its beaches and coves
- Visit the indoor and outdoor markets
- Walk through the old town and enjoy a coffee or wine
- Visit the Toy History Museum
- Attend the Festival of Porta Ferrada
- Visit the casino of la Constànci

I first came to Mattaranya, Aragon about 7 years ago and every time I come back it dazzles me with its beauty. It's a relatively scarse (not populated) area with some moutains and a lot of natural charme. It boasts some of the most beautiful villages in Spain and one of them is Calaceite with its just over 1000 inhabitants.

There are many ancient buildings of great architectural value in the town, as well as the ruins of an ancient Iberian village at Sant Antoni.

As its name suggests, olive trees are seen everywhere and are still producing the liquid gold. Olive oil consumption is at about 10 litres per person annualy in Spain.

Viladellops, established in 930, is a small village with a surviving medieval tower that served as a fortification and communication tower with Olèrdola Castle. The town consists of 18 well-preserved farmhouses, maintaining a century-old atmosphere.

In 1877, records mentioned wine production for commercial purposes on Viladellops Estate. The activity continued until 1980 when it was abandoned. It was revived in 1999 by the current Desvalls family generation.

Fancy a bike ride through Garraf Park?

This Nstional Park can be reached easily from the coastal town of Sitges and covers an area of 12,820 hectares of limestone hills. These have eroded over time to form caves, potholes, and limestone pavements.

The landscape is mostly Mediterranean scrubland, featuring the vegetation typical of the area: low rise shrubs and herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Other trees include pine trees, wild olive, fig and arbutus. The margalló deserves a special mention. It is a Mediterranean fan palm, which is the most characteristic plant of the area and a protected species.

Wildlife is limited and adapted to the hot climate and lack of water and includes wild boar, rabbits, Mediterranean tortoises, quails, Bonelli’s eagles, falcons, and other birds of prey.

There are not many buildings in the park, the most representative are the masías (farmhouses) that were linked to agricultural activity such as Can Marcer, Mas Quadrell and Can Grau (wine) and Mas Maiol, el Carxol and Vallgrassa (goat herding).

We had great fun at the Canals & Munné harvest festival a couple of weeks ago. We helped to pick the grapes and made juice (grape most) for the kids, while the adults tried some of their excellent wines and local produce in the middle of the vineyard.

Due to the dryer and hotter climate this year, the grapes are of great quality but unfortunately that also means that the production is lower than last year.

Have you ever taken part in a wine harvest activity?

This is Subirats Castle. It was one of the first castles built at the beginning of the 10th century when Sunyer, the Count of Barcelona, began the conquest of the Penedès against the Saracens.
Where in 1307, Geralda de Codines, who had been accused of witchcraft and heresy, accused the Muslim Axa of the same. From this historical enclave, you can catch a glimpse of Catalan history during the turbulent centuries of the reconquest.

It also has a splendid viewpoint over the Penedès region and the Montserrat mountains.

It's worth a visit! We are visiting the castle grounds on our cycling and wine tour! Get in touch for more information!
