Our handmade yurts form part of a family run farm, 3km from Tarifa, Costa de la Luz, Andalucia, Spain - the wind and kite surfing Mecca of Europe. We offer three beautifully furnished yurts (handcrafted by us) with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. The 5 hectare farm overlooks the Straight of Gibraltar and Morocco and is home to a host of friendly animals, an organic veggie garden and our yo

ung family. We like our guests to feel at home, enjoy the freshly laid eggs and help themselves to homegrown fruit from the trees. It´s the perfect base from which to experience our sustainable lifestyle, as well as for walking, bike riding, birdwatching and all the attractions of nearby Tarifa (wind and kite surfing, rock climbing, nightlife, whale watching, horse riding, etc.), only a 10 min. The yurts are the perfect way to enjoy the proximity of nature with all the creature comforts of a hostel. With cool tiled floors, a hobbit like wooden door opening onto natural park and all the ambience of a round nomadic dwelling, the yurts are more luxury than camping! Each yurt sleeps up to 4 people with one double bed and two singles, and plenty of room to move around! They have roll up windows to increase air flow, and show off the view, and are double insulated and attractively lined to maintain an agreeable temperature, whatever the weather. Each yurt opens onto lovely gardens and has its own picnic table. The recycled and sustainable timber framed bathrooms and kitchen facilities, within the yurt gardens, are decorated with the same homely style. We are proud to say that all installations, including our water system, are powered by solar and wind generated electricity, bringing us one step closer to self sufficiency. Wherever possible we have tried to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum without sacrificing quality or comfort. Every guest automatically contributes to our association (deducted from the reservation fee) which is dedicated to improving the relationship between visitors and nature. We are constantly investing in bettering our surroundings to attract and protect wildlife and help you appreciate our unique surroundings.

The Nísperos (loquats) are abundant this year. The birds and the bees love them but I'm taking my share for this delicious jam. They are so much work to pit and peel but the result is worth it!

Los nísperos están en abundancia este año. A los pájaros y a las abejas les encantan, pero yo me quedo con mi parte para esta deliciosa mermelada. ¡Cuesta mucho deshuesarlos y pelarlos, pero el resultado vale la pena!

Pedro's gone walkabout, we should have called him Houdini..we don't know how he does it but he'll always find a way out and go visiting his donkey friends.

If you see him on the track you are welcome to try and walk him home! He's very docile.

Jugando con esos elementos en nuestros jardines puede crear una simulación de la naturaleza con buenos resultados para todos - suelo de mejor calidad, llena de vida y que retiene humedad y estructura cuando llueve o hay periodos de sequia; comida con un contenido más alto de vitaminas y minerales; alimento para una gran variedad de insectos, invertebrados y anphipios que en torno alimentan a las aves - todos los cuales están amenazados cada vez más.

Ser propietario de un terreno es ser custiodo de un trozo del planeta y todos sus elementos y habitantes. Es una responsabilidad que tomamos en serio.

Siempre estamos aprendiendo y experimentando para mejorar nuestro entorno - para el bien del medio ambiente y nuestro disfrute. Ser rodeado de belleza natural y el sonido de los pájaros nos hace sentir enteros como nada...

Now we're able to get ready for the season!. We've had more rain than in years and enough to guarantee a real show of wild flowers over the next few months. But for now it's time to w**d, clean and fix up the yurts for opening in April. Check out the website for availability...

Family holidays can be tricky - trying to please everyone with different expectations, vastly varied energy levels and interests. Especially when it's both your teenagers birthdays!! We seem to have found a pretty good combination this time!
Some action, nature, culture and history, good food, fun and new friends.
This time our pre-season holiday was also a mission to move our son from his Austrian snow season adventure to university in Germany. We are so proud of his hard work and openness, that will lead him to make great friends and learn many new skills.

I reap the benefits of all those warrior women that came before me and continue to fight every day.
My thoughts are for those that don't enjoy my privelage yet and I wish for a fairer world for future generations. It's bittersweet celebration of how far we've come and a reminder of how far there is to go...

Life after rain.... Just a few minutes from the hub of the town we have this protected area for
marine birds. The dilapidated boardwalk and birdwatching hideouts offer a real spectacale when enough water accumulates to form these coastal lagoons, attracting herons and even the occasional flamingo.
I'm not an avid birdwatcher but anyone would be enchanted by this scene of wildlife, water and the setting sun.
I find it reassuring this important zone for breeding and migrating birds will always be protected from urban development and keep us connected to the natural world.

🇪🇸La vida después de la lluvia... A tan solo unos minutos del centro de la ciudad tenemos esta zona protegida para
aves marinas. El paseo marítimo en ruinas y los escondites para observar aves ofrecen un verdadero espectáculo cuando se acumula suficiente agua para formar estas lagunas costeras, que atraen garzas e incluso algún que otro flamenco.
No soy un ávido observador de aves, pero cualquiera quedaría encantado con esta escena de vida salvaje, agua y sol poniente.
Me resulta tranquilizador que esta importante zona para la cría y migración de aves esté siempre protegida del desarrollo urbano y nos mantenga conectados con el mundo natural

It's a banana bread kind of day...
With the excuse that it's way too muddy to work outside, it's a good day for cleaning out cupboards, using up old bananas and inventing new recipes!

Living out in the sticks means we bulk buy and often have tons of some things and none of others 🥴 and can lose track of what's in the cupboards. I don't like to throw anything away so have gotten pretty good at cooking on the fly with whatever's on hand. The rare food waste we do have goes to the chickens and comes back as eggs!

Self sufficient living doesn't just mean bringing in as little as possible from the outside world, but is also about using everything we have and doing as much as we can ourselves, from scratch - from building to cooking.

Time to write a proper shopping list.

Feliz día de Andalucía!!
Nunca hay que tomar por hecho que vivimos en un sitio privilegiado: lleno de alegría, tradiciones, muchísimo tiempo al aire libre y una cultura de vivir por el momento.
Aunque siempre seré "Guirifeña" he vivido aquí más de la mitad de mi vida y siempre agradecere la acogida...

We should never take for granted that we live in a privileged place: full of joy, traditions, lots of time outdoors and a culture of living for the moment.
Although I will always be "Guirifeña" (foreign Tarifeña) I have lived here for more than half my life and I will always be grateful for the welcome...

Having flu is when I love my herb garden the most (and the lemon tree!). 🤧

In very little space you can grow so much goodness - The oils from sage, rosemary and thyme ease the coughing, help to expectorate and open the airways. While their antibacterial properties will help kill off the sore throat.

The lemon adds a vitamin C boost and a balance to the local honey that I will add once cooler so as not to dampen it's healing powers - antibacterial, antiviral and soothing on the throat.

Now it's back to bed to listen to the rain - it's a good day to be ill!

🇪🇸Cuando tengo gripe es cuando más me gusta mi huerto de hierbas (¡y el limonero!). 🤧

En muy poco espacio puedes cultivar muchísimas cosas buenas. Los aceites de salvia, romero y tomillo alivian la tos, ayudan a expectorar y abren las vías respiratorias. Mientras que sus propiedades antibacterianas ayudan a acabar con el dolor de garganta.

El limón aporta un refuerzo de vitamina C y equilibra la miel local que añadiré cuando se enfríe un poco, para no reducir sus poderes curativos: antibacterianos, antivirales y calmantes para la garganta.

Ahora volvemos a la cama para escuchar la lluvia. ¡Es un buen día para estar enfermos!

Una escapadita a Ronda! A solo 2 horas ha sido un breve cambio de perspectiva, naturaleza, arquitectura...
Aún nos queda otro día para explorar más del interior de la cuidad - palacios, museos, comida - pero viene bien dejar algo para otro día!

A short getaway to Ronda! Just 2 hours away, It was a brief change of perspective, nature, architecture...
We still need another day to explore more of the city's interior - palaces, museums, shops - but it's good to leave something for next time!

This boat has a loooong history. I will tell the whole story one day, but for now we are giving it a makeover to make sure it's in good shape for the next season of pirates and adventurers!
I'm sure most kids would agree, a stay in the yurts wouldn't be the same without the Guadelmesi to play on.

One of many positive side effects of using wood chip - One day I'll get into inoculating some with edible mushrooms but for now it's encouraging that this system clearly imitates the natural processes of a forest floor and promotes diversity.

We use wood chip for the paths of the veggie garden and around perennials to retain moisture, reduce w**ding and promote fungal rizome growth. The miraculous fungi Kingdom has now been proven to support microbial life and transport water and micronutrients between plants, contributing to healthier soil even within the raised beds between the paths.

After only a few years of using these permaculture based methods we are starting to see real results and hope for more improvements every season.

I still marvel every time I see a majestic stork in their massive nest atop a pylon, or tree. They seem so exotic, so huge and elegant.

They used to migrate from Spain to North Africa, and Northerm Europe to Spain but, due to global warming and the abundance of human waste in landfills, have begun staying put.

They can now avoid the long hard treks they used to face every winter but sadly, yet again we have influenced the natural flow of their behaviour. At least they are flourishing for now and grace us with their presence, reminding us of the delicate balance between nature and human activity.
