There’s a way of getting to know Tarifa that the guidebooks miss: wandering through it with no plan at all.

Strolling the old town, between narrow white streets, flower-filled courtyards and corners where time slows right down. Passing through the Puerta de Jerez, the timeless way into the heart of town. Popping into the market in the morning, when it smells of fresh fish and seasonal fruit, and watching the locals do their shopping.

There’s an hour in Tarifa when everything slows down.
The sun begins to drop over the harbour, the sky turns orange and, across the water, the coast of Africa cuts into the horizon. The wind eases, people stop to watch, and for a moment the day seems to stretch a little longer.

Tarifa’s sunsets are like nowhere else. This is where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet, where Europe looks out at Africa, and where every evening ends like a different postcard.

250 metres from the beach, opposite Valdevaqueros: this is Casa Estrecho.

A stylish, bright, beautifully finished house in La Peña. Outside is where it starts. A saltwater pool and a garden set on a lower level, wrapped in mature greenery that shelters it on the windier days (and in Tarifa, there are a few).
