Extremadura muestra a los turistas ornitológicos del Reino Unido 🇬🇧 los mejores lugares para observar aves en la región.

Extremadura Turismo asiste a Global Birdfair (11-13 de julio), que tiene lugar en la Reserva Natural de Rutland, en el centro de Inglaterra.

Martin y Patrick Kelsey (Birding Extremadura y Casa Rural El Refugio) y José Luis Bautista (Wildroots Extremadura) informarán al público en el stand extremeño, en representación de los socios del Club Birding.

A wonderful day yesterday in the Sierra de Bejar watching one of Spain’s rarest butterflies, the Yellow-banded Skipper (Pyrgus sidae). It is a annual treat for me!

Yesterday it was fascinating to watch this (well-documented) tool-use by Egyptian Vultures. This bird used the stone to crack open the Ostrich egg that had been placed in front of the hide at La Cañada, near Monfragüe. Both Griffon and Cinereous Vultures had tried to crack open the egg by pecking or pressing on it using their feet, without success. One wonders if this individual had ever been to the right area of Africa to encounter an Ostrich egg before.

The Splendid Cruiser (Macromia splendens) is a very scarce and localised dragonfly. It is invariably seen in flight, cruising over pools in rocky rivers in well wooded valleys, and not easy to photograph. We watched at least six individuals yesterday at one site in Las Hurdes in the north-west of Extremadura, and were then delighted to find this one perched in a shrub on the side of the valley.

Some butterflies from the last few days in the Gredos Mountains. Presumably because of the cold and wet spring, butterfly numbers were generally low and some species were not on the wing. However we did find 54 species, including Green-underside Blue (Glaucopysche alexis), Blue-spot Hairstreak (Satyrium spini), Panoptes Blue (Scolitantides panoptes), Sooty Copper (Lycaena tityrus), a rather late and tatty Spanish Fritillary (Euphydryas desfontainii) and Spanish Argus (Aricia morronensis).

Some highlights two days in from Chris’s and Nicole’s private birding tour, to enjoy spring in Extremadura (notwithstanding the wet and windy weather which has been a feature of the last two months): a , Collared , a very smart Spanish and Great Spotted .
