Last sunday Valencia celebrated its nationally known Marathon. 43 kilometres. An intensive circuit designed to enjoy. Media, runners and people were following closely this sports event. Winners were the kenians Victor Kipchirchir and Valary Aiyabei with impressive times ( 2.07:38 y 2:24:48).

'El Cabanyal' is an area full of history and contrasts. Near the beach and near one of the most expensive hotels in Valencia, you can find this area which has been an issue of local politics for the last ten years.

Back in the 19th century, this was the area where fishermen lived. The small houses, with tall ceilings and many decorative motifs follow the principles of modernism that dominated the scene during the century. One month ago, 'Las falleras mayores de Valencia' were elected. This two women have a vital importance in the local festivity that takes place during the month of march. I'm sure you heard about fallas!...but did you know that they choose them amongst hundreds of candidates?. They have to prove that they are fit to represent the city. It is a huge honour for them to be elected and representation will become their job during a whole year.

Halloween VS All Saints.

The 1st of novemeber we celebrate the day of all saints and traditionally people go to the cementery to take flowers and pray for their dead relatives. Nevertheless, this tradition has been lost to other foreign celebrations like halloween. Specially by the youngest who see this, not as a catholic celebration, but as a chance to get dressed up and party during the night. Some of them even combine a spooky halloween night with a visit to the cementery next morning. ¿Halloween or all saints?. The best thing is to celebrate both!

We would like to share with you this video created by the most important musical institution at Valencia. 'El Palau de la Música' celebrates its 30th anniversary and its orchestra have decided to play at the thirty most beautiful spots of the city. Between them we can find many local markets, squares, the river bed and the Palau building. It is a wonderful video and we say thank you for the music!

They look like real fruits...but they are made from marzipan!

The 9th of october valencian lovers buy a tray full of this sweets to celebrate their love. The sweets come packed in coloured handkerchiefs as the ones women working at the fields used some centuries ago to gather the fruits. We don't know the exact origins of this tradition. In fact there are many theories related to it... one of them is that when king Jaume the first came to free the city of Valencia, wemen offered him handkerchiefs full of fruits to thank him for the conquest.

But there are many others...and the mistery lasts till nowadays!

The 9th of october is a local festivity. We skip work and we celebrate the foundation of Valencia as a reign. Back in the 13th Century a King called Jaume the first came to the city and took it back from the arab power (who had been ruling in the peninsula for some centuries).

In order to remember how we gained our identity it's a tradition to wait under the city town hall balcony for the descent of the royal flag, which can't bow to no-one under any circumstances. The care and solemnity of this act makes it very emotional to some valencian people.

A parade also takes place with men and women dressed as arabs in order to remember the history of the city. The conclusion is that everyone has fun!
