Welcome to the magical, musical, and explosive world of Fallas!! Someone once said that all art is temporary, and here, that expression is taken to the extreme. Artists work during the whole year to create beautiful sculptures which provoke reflection, maybe a chuckle, a LOL or outright tears. This art is shared with the world for four days. On the 19th of March, the sculptures are burned to the ground in a fit of fireworks and under the watchful eyes of firefighters and of thousands of onlookers. On the 20th of March, a new canvas is set on the frame and the cycle begins again.

Earlier this week we went to check out the castle of Almansa 🏰

This is possibly the best curated castle that we've visited in Spain!

Recently re-opened to the public in 2020, it is full of fascinating information, stories and extremely passionate guides.

And there's a reason for their passion! This site is full of important Spanish history. Being a strategic border castle between the Kingdoms of Castillo and Aragon, it was hard fought over for many years.

The most famous battle that took place here, the Battle of Amansa in 1707, laid the groundwork for Spain as we know it today. The current monarchy in Spain are descended from the victors of this Battle, the Bourbons.

Every year, there is huge international recreation of this Battle on the weekend closest to April 25th. Something to add to your travel calendar, perhaps?! 😉
