Si hay un monumento imprescindible en Vigo, ése es el monumento a Julio Verne. El genial escritor dedicó un capítulo a “La Bahía de Vigo” en uno de sus libros más famosos, 20.000 leguas de viaje submarino, alimentando la leyenda sobre el tesoro de Rande a través del popular personaje del Capitán Nemo y su famoso Nautilus. Julio Verne incluso vino a conocer la ciudad, tiempo después de escribir la novela. Así que, para agradecérselo, en el centenario de su muerte (2005), la Asociación de Mujeres Empresarias de Pontevedra encargó esta escultura de bronce al artista vigués José Molares y la donó a la ciudad. Desde entonces el escritor está sentado sobre los tentáculos de un calamar gigante en las Avenidas, junto a los jardines de Montero Ríos.
If there's an essential monument in Vigo, it's Jules Verne's monument. The brilliant writer dedicated a chapter to "Vigo Bay" in one of his most famous books, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, feeding the legend about the treasure of Rande through the popular character of Captain Nemo and his famous Nautilus. Jules Verne even came to visit the city, some time after writing the novel. So, to thank him, on the centenary of his death (2005), the Association of Businesswomen of Pontevedra commissioned this bronze sculpture from the Vigo artist José Molares and donated it to the city. Since then, the writer has been sitting on the tentacles of a giant squid in the Avenidas, next to the Montero Ríos gardens.
