When it comes to outdoor adventures, flexibility is key. Sometimes, unexpected circumstances can lead to a change of plans, but that doesn't mean the adventure has to end. Such was the case for Abdu Shikur and Friends, a group of 13 young adventurers who had originally planned a trip to Wenchi Crater Lake with Aesop Hiking and Camping. Due to unforeseen circumstances, their destination had to be changed to Negash Resort- Negash Lodge , but little did they know that this change would lead to an even more epic adventure.
After thoroughly preparing for the trip, we set off on Thursday, January 18th, 2024 in the morning and drove for three hours until we reached our destination.
Regrettably, security concerns prevented us from visiting the Lake surrounding. The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali, and his delegation were visiting the lake on the same day to observe the progress of the Wenchi Dandi Eco-Tourism Village and Lodge, which is the 3rd destination of the PM's 'Dine for Ethiopia' initiative.
We had planned and driven 188km from Addis Ababa with the intention of experiencing the natural beauty of the area, including hiking trails with breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings, swimming in the sapphire-blue waters, exploring the newlyweds built footbridge and glass bridges, and engaging in various activities during our two-day, one-night campaign trip. It was truly disappointing to miss out on this opportunity.
Realizing that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces were not going to grant us entrance, we were left with two choices. The first option was to turn back and return to Addis.
However, we decided to take the second option, which involved driving approximately 38km for about an hour from the beautiful to Walisso city. There, we found a place to spend the night called Negash Lodge. Although Negash Lodge couldn't offer the same amenities as Wenchi Lake, it was still a preferable alternative to going back to Addis.
Surrounded by lush green nature, diverse animals and birds, and clean fresh air, this resort offers an array of in-house facilities including restaurants, a swimming pool, an open-air coffee house, cycling, a gym, and a spa. What sets this lodge apart is that each room represents a different type of home from Ethiopian tribes, providing a unique cultural immersion experience.
The resort's commitment to biodiversity and cultural diversity is commendable. Our stay was peaceful and pleasant, with expansive gardens teeming with flowers, towering trees, and playful monkeys. The staff, particularly in the restaurant, were incredibly attentive and kind, serving up delicious meals.
Aesop Hiking and Camping served as a trusted guide for Abdu Shikur and Friends, leading them on a memorable journey. After their overnight stay, the group explored the lodge's lush surroundings, engaged in exercise and cycling at the gym, enjoyed the swimming pool, and captured photos to commemorate the trip. Departing at 8 am (LT), we headed towards Addis Ababa from one of Ethiopia's finest resorts. The team at Aesop Hiking and Camping ensured that every moment was filled with excitement, offering unique hiking and camping accommodations.
Abdu Shikur and Friends unexpectedly ended up at Negash Lodge, leading them to reflect on the value of unplanned adventures. These moments of adaptability allow for true exploration, forming new friendships, pushing personal limits, and creating lasting memories.
