The Mysterious Behaviour of the Gelada Baboon

A mother Gelada baboon’s bond with her offspring is one of the most emotional scenes you can witness in the wild. In my shepherding days, I witnessed a heartbreaking moment where a mother Gelada refused to leave the body of her deceased baby.

She continued to carry and embrace her little one, walking with it for days until the natural process of decomposition began.

If you follow her path, you will see a mother’s deep attachment and grief — a powerful reminder of the emotions and complex behaviours found in wildlife.

I invite wildlife researchers and conservationists to share their knowledge and help us understand the science behind this extraordinary behaviour.
