𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖? | 𝐔𝐤𝐞𝐞

Ukee is a traditional Oromo children’s festival, celebrated around this time of the year, during the rainy season, when the land is green and childrencome together in celebration.

It is a time when children come together through traditional songs, games, dancing, cultural activities, and joyful community gatherings.

Traditionally, children move together in groups, carrying their ‘ulee’ (sticks), singing Ukkee songs, playing, and celebrating together. Playful whip-cracking and other traditional games are also part of the joyful celebration as children meet and gather with one another.

In some communities, children also gather around temporary shelters made from leaves and branches, creating a special space for celebration.

Ukkee is more than play and entertainment. It creates a space for children to learn, experience, and carry Oromo culture forward, while strengthening friendship, community, and cultural identity.

At the breathtaking Wanchi, together with Borati Art Promotion, we brought this beautiful tradition to life through music, dance, traditional activities, and the joyful participation of children and the community.

As Birraa brings a season of renewal, Ukkee reminds us that our culture, too, lives on through the next generation.
