📜 Historical Significance
Founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, a major Ethiopian Orthodox saint.
It became one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
The monastery has long been associated with Ethiopian emperors and religious leadership.

The current church building was constructed in the 20th century after earlier structures were destroyed.
