On our way back from a sacred Hamar Bull Jumping ceremony, we came across this dry riverbed the community’s only source of life. For this community, this dry riverbed is the only source of water. As we watched, the Hamar people were digging deep into the sand just to fetch water for themselves and their cattle. It was a powerful reminder of resilience and an untouched, authentic way of life.

Where else could you capture a photograph as real as this? This moment truly made our expedition complete.

In the dust of the Omo, you don’t just look you listen to the stories written on the skin. Among the Suri and Mursi, the lip plate the dhebi a tugoin is the mark of a woman who knows who she is. It is the name of her people carried in clay.

As I am a local , I have watched this walk into womanhood many times. Around the age of 15, a girl decides to take this path. It is a slow journey of patience. The piercing and the stretching is not just about beauty; it shows she has a heart of iron. A large plate, sometimes over 12 cm, is a sign that she stands tall in her community and carries the fire of her ancestors.

For my photography partners, When you come to these villages with me, don’t just hunt for a shot.Look for the soul. Look at how the hand fired clay catches the morning sun. Notice the pride in her eyes. This is not a performance for visitors; this is the true life that the modern world could never wash away.

The Desert Rose and the Hamer Heart

To find the most authentic stories, you have to drive where the pavement ends.

On my most recent photo expedition to the Omo Valley, we journeyed into the most remote corners of Hamer land. We didn’t just visit; we camped for two days in the heart of the village to witness the sacred Bull Jumping ceremony.

Along the way, the landscape gifted us with a stunning sight: the Desert Rose blooming in the middle of the rugged wilderness. To see such delicate beauty growing in such a tough environment reminds me of the people here: genuine, resilient, and full of life.

From the joyous smiles of the Hamer women to the focused preparation of the young men, the experience was truly indescribable. As a guide, my goal is always to bring you to these hidden galleries where the Painting and the Painter meet in perfect harmony.
