Irreecha is a distinctive thanks giving ceremony in Oromo traditional culture – the Oromo constituting Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group – to give thanks to Waaqa, the creator of all things for the blessings and mercies they have received throughout the previous year, and to pray for Nagaa (peace) and Araara (reconciliation) among humans and with God.
The festival is celebrated every year at the beginning of Birraa (Spring), the new season after the dark and rainy winter season, at sacred lakes across Oromia and particularly at Hora Harsadi, Bishoftu, 45 kms south of Addis Ababa. The name Irreechaa itself indicates ‘green and fresh grass’.
More than a million people have attended Irreechaa in Bishoftu in recent years, and since 2023 Irreecha has also celebrated in Hora Finfine (Addis Ababa) - it makes for a fascinating and colorful carnival, with a wonderful atmosphere, with men and women dressed in their traditional clothes dancing and singing.
Hora Finfinne will be observed in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on October 3, while Irreechaa Hora Harsade will be celebrated in Bishoftu town the following day, October4, 2026.
