Bale Mountains National Park, Ethiopia — One Park, Many Worlds 🌍
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bale Mountains National Park—often called the “Roof of Africa”—is one of the continent’s most extraordinary natural landscapes. It encompasses the Gaysay Grassland, Adelay Woodlands, the Afro-alpine Sanetti Plateau, and the high-altitude Harenna Forest, each supporting distinctive flora and fauna.
The park features dramatic volcanic peaks and ridges, glacial valleys, alpine meadows and lakes, deep gorges and escarpments, tropical montane forests, and spectacular waterfalls. Known as the Water Tower of Africa, Bale is the source of five major rivers that supply water to millions of people in Ethiopia and neighboring countries.
Bale Mountains National Park is a global biodiversity hotspot. It supports around 1,660 species of flowering plants, including 177 endemic to Ethiopia and 31 found nowhere else on Earth. The park hosts at least 363 bird species, including 6 of Ethiopia’s 18 endemic birds, and 79 mammal species, 23 of which are endemic. More than 30 amphibian and reptile species are endemic to Ethiopia, with 6 exclusive to Bale.
Because of this exceptional concentration of endemic wildlife, conservationists warn that the loss of Bale’s habitats would result in more mammal extinctions than any other area of comparable size on Earth. The park is especially vital for two flagship species—the Ethiopian wolf and the mountain nyala—with over 50% of their global populations residing within Bale. Other notable endemic species include the giant mole rat, Bale monkey, and Harenna shrew.
