The Hamer people of southern Ethiopia have a remarkable cultural tradition known as Ukuli Bula. This ceremony marks a young man's transition from boyhood to adulthood.
Before the bull jump, some of his female relatives participate in a ritual of dancing, singing, and whipping. Traditionally, this expresses their loyalty and support for their relative. The scars may also represent a lasting bond and an expectation that he will help them in the future.
