The lip plate among the Surma people (also called Suri) is a traditional cultural practice, mainly for young women.

In simple terms:
• It’s a decorative clay or wooden plate worn in the lower lip.
• A small cut is made first, then gradually larger plates are inserted over time.
• The size varies—there’s no fixed “standard.”

What does it mean?

The Hamar bull-jumping ceremony is a significant rite of passage for young Hamar men. Basically, the young man has to jump over a line of bulls, usually around four to eight, and he has to do it several times without falling. It’s a symbol of maturity and readiness for marriage. And the weeping part often refers to the emotional aspect of the ceremony, both for the young man and his family, as it’s a very intense and meaningful transition.
