ABOUT SURI WOMENS AND THEIR LIPS PLEATS
The Suri (or Surma) people are an ethnic group living in southwestern Ethiopia, primarily in the Omo Valley. One of the most striking and well-known aspects of Suri culture—especially among the women—is the tradition of wearing lip plates, a practice that has attracted fascination, misunderstanding, and controversy from outsiders.

Lip Plates: Cultural Context
• When it’s done: Suri girls typically begin the process of lip stretching in their early to mid-teens, often around the age of 15 or 16. It usually coincides with the time they are considered ready for marriage.
• How it’s done: A small incision is made in the lower lip, and a small wooden peg is inserted. Over time, larger plates—usually made of clay or wood—are gradually inserted to stretch the lip. The final size of the plate can reach up to 16 inches (about 40 cm) in diameter, though not all women go to that extreme.
• Symbolism and Meaning:
• Beauty and Identity: Within Suri culture, lip plates are a symbol of beauty and female maturity.
• Marriageability: Traditionally, the size of the lip plate was thought to relate to the bride price, particularly the number of cattle her family would receive. However, this idea has been debated and may not universally apply even among the Suri.
• Resistance to colonization: Some suggest that such body modifications historically served as acts of resistance, making women “less appealing” to slave traders or colonial oppressors—though this is more of a theory than a confirmed historical fact.

Modern Perspectives
• Not all Suri women wear lip plates: While it’s a well-known practice, some women choose not to go through the process today, especially as modernization and outside influence affect traditional customs.
• Tourism and Media Impact: The lip plate tradition has drawn significant attention from tourists and photographers. While this brings visibility, it also sometimes reduces the practice to a spectacle, disconnected from its cultural roots.
• Changing Attitudes: Younger generations are increasingly balancing tradition with education and modern life, and there’s debate within the community about maintaining, modifying, or abandoning certain customs.

Maze National Park is a captivating wildlife sanctuary located in the Gamo Gofa Zone of Ethiopia’s South Ethiopia Regional State. Established in 2005, the park spans approximately 210 square kilometers and is situated about 460 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa and 235 kilometers from Hawassa .

Wildlife and Biodiversity

The park is renowned for its significant population of the endangered Swayne’s hartebeest, an antelope species endemic to Ethiopia. In addition to the hartebeest, Maze National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including African buffalos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, servals, greater and lesser kudus, waterbucks, bushbucks, oribis, warthogs, bushpigs, Anubis baboons, and vervet monkeys. Bird enthusiasts can also delight in observing over 196 bird species within the park .

Natural Features and Attractions

The park’s landscape is characterized by savannah grasslands interspersed with deciduous broadleaf trees, bushland, woodland, and riverine forests. Notable natural attractions include the Bilbo hot springs in the southern part of the park, known for their geysers that emit steam into the air, and the Wonja stone caves, which historically served as a refuge and can accommodate up to 300 people .

Cultural Experiences

Maze National Park is surrounded by communities of the Gamo, Qucha, Gofa, and Omotic ethnic groups. Visitors have the opportunity to engage with these communities, experiencing their unique cultural practices, traditional foods, and crafts. The nearby Chosho Market offers a glimpse into local commerce and features culturally significant sites, such as the Kaouwo Welloa, or “King’s Tree,” revered by locals .

Visiting Tips
•Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons, from January to May and September to December, are ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals are more active and roads are more accessible. The wet season, from March to September, is optimal for birdwatching, though some areas may be less accessible due to rainfall .

Maze National Park offers a unique blend of rich biodiversity, striking natural features, and vibrant cultural experiences, making it a noteworthy destination for eco-tourism in Ethiopia.

Discover Omo valley tribes like never before!

🗒4 Nights / 5 Days - Starting from just USD 675$ per person (upwards)!

The Omo Valley tribes of southwestern Ethiopia are among the most culturally diverse and visually striking indigenous groups in Africa. Located near the Omo River, the region is home to over a dozen distinct tribes, including the Hamar, Mursi, Kara (Karo), Dassanech, and Bodi, each with its own language, traditions, and customs.

These tribes are renowned for their elaborate body art, scarification, beadwork, and lip plates (especially among the Mursi women). Their way of life—largely pastoralist or agro-pastoralist—has remained relatively unchanged for centuries, though it is increasingly affected.

Despite these challenges, the Omo Valley remains a vital cultural landscape, offering insights into human diversity and the resilience of traditional ways of living.
