Today we drove along the stunning Catherine–Dodom road and reached Lake Alale just in time for a breathtaking sunset.

We also visited the salt flats, a hidden gem not many tourists get to see. The shimmering salt, the calm waters of the lake, and the golden glow of the evening made it an unforgettable experience.

DAY 2 Catherine Volcano | Off-the-Beaten-Path Danakil
Today, we explore Catherine Volcano, one of the most remote and least-visited volcanoes in the Danakil Depression. Unlike Erta Ale, Catherine is not active with lava, but it offers something even rarer: silence, isolation, and raw volcanic landscapes untouched by mass tourism.
Very few travelers reach this area due to its remoteness and harsh environment. The drive itself is an adventure, crossing vast lava fields, salt plains, and dramatic desert scenery that shows the true power of the Earth.
At the volcano, we walk around the ancient crater, surrounded by black basalt and volcanic formations shaped by past eruptions. From the rim, the views stretch endlessly across the Danakil lowlands — a place where nature still dominates and human presence is minimal.
This is not about crowds or comfort, but about exploration, geology, and experiencing a place that remains wild and authentic. Catherine Volcano is perfect for travelers who want to go beyond the classic routes and discover a side of Ethiopia that few people will ever see.

Day 1 | Mekelle – Erta Ale Volcano
Today we started our journey early from Mekelle, driving through the vast and dramatic landscapes of the Afar region toward Erta Ale. The road itself is an experience — endless plains, desert colors, and a feeling of entering another world.
In the evening we reached Erta Ale. Although the lava lake was not visible this time, the rising smoke, heat, and the atmosphere of the volcano were powerful and unforgettable. Standing on one of the most active volcanoes on Earth is always special.
A strong and exciting start to our expedition with Grande Tigrai Tours.
