Capri was our final day trip. The beautiful Marina Grande greets visitors arriving on the countless ferries. From there, we took a boat ride around the whole island to enjoy spectacular views and scenery, including the famous Faraglioni rocks that rise out of the sea. We then went to Anacapri to the Church of San Michele to see its tile floor mosaic from the 1700s and to enjoy lunch and shopping. We ended the day with the chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro for panoramic views over the Bay of Naples before returning to Positano.

Amalfi and Ravello. Amalfi is the namesake for the Amalfi Coast. The city’s cathedral claims to house the remains of the apostle Andrew. Amalfi is a popular place for day-trippers to shop, enjoy lemon everything, or lounge at the beach.

Ravello is a short bus ride from Amalfi up the mountain. Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are the two major sites to visit, each with incredible views and gardens. The town’s main square and side streets are good for eating and shopping.

We spent a day in Sorrento, where we toured a lemon grove, learned about and tasted mozzarella cheese and olive oil, and made pizzas for lunch. Then, we had free time in the city to shop and explore. It was one of the best days!

Positano is the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast. Amazing scenery, food and day trips can be enjoyed from this small piece of heaven on earth!

The ruins of ancient Herculaneum reveal what life was like in a Roman resort town near the sea. Incredible structures, mosaics and frescoes survived two millennia buried under mud and have been excavated over the past few centuries. Like in Pompeii, but with fewer tourists, those who visit will learn much more about life in 79 A.D. before the furious eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It was a great side-trip!

The ruins of ancient Pompeii are a popular day trip from Naples and Rome. Thousands of people enter the archaeological site each day to imagine what life was like in 79 A.D. when Mount Vesuvius erupted with its fury. The Roman city layout is the blueprint for early American cities. Paved streets with sidewalks and crosswalks (cross steps) were way ahead of their time. Restaurants, spas, houses and more are on display. A good guide like Pompeii tour guide helps to locate the best places - and the places other tourists don’t know about - to get the most out of the experience. Pro Tip: go early before the crowds arrive! Have you been to Pompeii before?

Paestum’s Archaeological Park is an hour train ride from Naples. The site includes some of the oldest and best preserved Greek temples in the world. Again, most people have never heard of this place. At Stevens Travels, we look for unique experiences that are off the beaten path - and where the other tourists won’t be. A guided tour of Paestum is extremely informative and rewarding!

The Royal Palace of Caserta is less than an hour from Naples and is the largest palace in the world by volume. Yet, most people have never even heard of it. The palace rivals Versailles and has 1,200 rooms, 1,742 windows, and miles of gardens. Inside, the decor is elaborate. Outside, the fountains and hidden gardens are fascinating. Caserta truly is a spectacle, and it is hard to believe this was dreamed up in the 1700s!

Earlier this summer, we had a group in southern Italy, based first in Naples then along the Amalfi Coast.

Naples can be chaotic, but it has a lot of history and sure is convenient for other popular day trips. The National Archaeological Museum contains frescos and artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum, which helps bring those sites to life. Castel Sant’Elmo offers panoramic views of the city and the Bay of Naples, including Mount Vesuvius. Other sites when strolling are the Royal Palace of Naples, Piazza del Plebiscito, and the Spanish Quarter.
