Volubilis and Meknes
The Roman ruins of Volubilis are definitely worth a visit when in Morocco! It is quite amazing that the Roman Empire stretched this far west in the first through third centuries - in northwest Africa. The site includes remains of a basilica, temple, triumphal gate, houses, mosaics, the marketplace, and much more. The city was abandoned for about 1,000 years and then the remaining structures were destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. After this, many of the materials were taken to the nearby city of Meknes for construction there.
Meknes is one of the imperial cities of Morocco. The Bab Mansour (gate) is the most elaborate in Morocco and also includes two columns from Volubilis. The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail (a fifty-year ruler of Morocco) has elaborate details, especially tile. Enjoy the medina (old town) for shopping and eating.
