Volubilis and Meknes

The Roman ruins of Volubilis are definitely worth a visit when in Morocco! It is quite amazing that the Roman Empire stretched this far west in the first through third centuries - in northwest Africa. The site includes remains of a basilica, temple, triumphal gate, houses, mosaics, the marketplace, and much more. The city was abandoned for about 1,000 years and then the remaining structures were destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. After this, many of the materials were taken to the nearby city of Meknes for construction there.

Meknes is one of the imperial cities of Morocco. The Bab Mansour (gate) is the most elaborate in Morocco and also includes two columns from Volubilis. The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail (a fifty-year ruler of Morocco) has elaborate details, especially tile. Enjoy the medina (old town) for shopping and eating.

Fez is one of the imperial cities of Morocco and is the country’s culture capitol. Fez is home to the world’s oldest university and is also one of the world’s largest pedestrian-only zones. The medina (old town) is surrounded by a wall with imposing gates. Inside the medina, a labyrinth of thousands of narrow streets with shops and houses is easy to get lost in! Visit the Chouara Tannery for cool pictures of the circular vessels for dyeing leather, but be ready to purchase something or give the shop owners with good views a tip for using their platforms. Also noteworthy was watching the sunset overlooking the city. And of course, enjoy good food and hot tea at local restaurants. Zoom in on some of the pictures to better appreciate the intricate tile and woodwork!

From Marrakech, journey over the beautiful Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient city on what once was the caravan route from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert. The earthen city was once fortified and a thriving place. Today, only a few families live in the old part with most of the population across the river in the new area of town. Interestingly, movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Alexander, Prince of Persia, and many others have been filmed here with locals as stand-ins for background characters. Ait Ben Haddou is a fascinating place and a must-see while in Morocco. Spectacular mountain views along the way are an added bonus!

Marrkech is one of the most popular places to visit in Morocco. The city has a large marketplace filled with photogenic shops that sell everything imaginable, including in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square where there is always something going on. Historical sites such as the Bahia Palace, Jardin Majorelle and Saadian tombs impress visitors. Stay in a riad (a traditional Moroccan house that faces a courtyard) or in a resort hotel and enjoy fine dining in restaurants or street food in the souk (marketplace). Marrakech really is a neat place!

Essaouira and Casablanca, Morocco

Essaouira is a coastal resort and fishing town on the Atlantic Ocean. Highlights are to enjoy the ramparts, boats and the chaos of the fishing markets, along with strolling through the maze of streets in the old town. Here are some interesting facts about Essaouira:

1. The Portuguese built the fort in Essaouira in the early 1500s
2. The city’s population was once dominated by Jews
3.Europeans helped design the old part of the city
4. During the U.S. civil war, a Confederate ship attempted to land in Essaouira, but was turned away.
5. Essaouira (and most of Morocco) was under a French protectorate for about 50 years in the 1900s

Casablanca is the main port of entry for international visitors. The city’s most famous site is the Hassan II Mosque, the biggest in Africa and third biggest in the world. A re-created Rick’s Cafe from the movie Casablanca is popular with tourists, as is shopping at the major mall or the small streets of the old town.

Back in October, one of our travel groups took a cooking class with SiChef.Cooking - and had a blast! Vilma and Tommaso guided our group through how to make homemade pasta, and we got to enjoy the finished product for lunch. Si Chef is located in the beautiful countryside of Italy, which added to the experience. We highly recommend taking Si Chef's cooking class!

Porvoo is the second oldest city in Finland and makes a great day trip from Helsinki (45 minutes by bus or car). The former red warehouses along the river really stand out by the river and make great photos - especially in the snow…

Helsinki, Finland was freezing cold, but also incredible! From Senate Square and the national cathedral to creative museums, and from Christmas still being celebrated (12 Days of Christmas) to great restaurants of all kinds, Helsinki has something for everyone. Highly recommend - but not in the winter time!!

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. The city has a medieval old town which is incredible, including walls that were 1.5 miles around and originally had 46 towers. Visitors today can walk on portions of the walls and climb up some towers to see how the defense system worked (and for great views). Tallinn’s town hall was completed in 1404 and houses a neat little museum. Don’t miss the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms for panoramic views of the old portion of the city. Finally, the churches and restaurants are all worth a visit, as well!
