We're only a couple of days away from Finland's ultimate springtime celebration, Vappu – First of May! 🎉🥸

Vappu is a joyful mix of protest and party, tradition and play. Originally rooted in the workers' rights movement and the academic calendar, Vappu has grown into a two-day explosion of colour, community and cheeky student culture.

Things not to miss 👇

⛲️ Crowning of Havis Amanda event at the Market Square on the eve of May Day

🎈 Colourful balloons and paper streamers

🍾 Traditional Finnish Vappu food and drinks: Sima (mead), munkki (sugar doughnut), and tippaleipä (funnel cake)

🌿 May Day picnic in the Kaivopuisto Park

👋 Tip for first-timers: Bring layers! It's spring in Finland, after all. That means it could be sunny, rainy or snowy – and sometimes it will be all three. Regardless of weather, Vappu is to be celebrated outdoors! 😁

Can you feel the heat? 🔥🧖‍♂️🌿 World Sauna Day is back and inviting people everywhere to share the communal sauna experience!

World Sauna Day is a global celebration of one of Finland's most cherished traditions and part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage, sauna. 🌍

Helsinki celebrates World Sauna Day this Saturday 25 April with a variety of sauna experiences, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience the warmth, wellbeing, and community that define its vibrant sauna culture and open the doors to many saunas that are not open to the public. Even private home saunas can take part.

In Helsinki, sauna experiences are as diverse as the city itself. Visitors can unwind in traditional wood-heated saunas, take a dip in the Baltic Sea between sessions, or explore contemporary public saunas that combine architecture and social spaces. 🌊

Whether a quiet moment alone or a shared experience with friends, there is a sauna for every preference and mood.

World Sauna Day offers a rare opportunity to discover local sauna traditions in their many forms! 💯

With an impressive span of over one kilometre, Kruunuvuorensilta is now the longest bridge in Finland and an important new route in the city's maritime landscape. The bridge also creates an important new connection between the city centre and the lovely island district of Laajasalo. 🌊

Helsinki’s long-awaited, new maritime route opens to pedestrians and cyclists this Saturday 18 April! 🚴‍♀️🌊🌿

The new Kruunuvuorensilta bridge, connecting Korkeasaari and Kruunuvuorenranta in Laajasalo, is the longest, tallest and longest-standing bridge in Finland – and it’s also globally exceptional as bridges this size have not been traditionally built for the sole use of public transportation, pedestrian traffic and cycling. ✨🌉

The opening festivities on Saturday will start at 2pm when Mayor Daniel Sazonov will declare Kruunuvuori Bridge open by cutting the ribbon at the Korkeasaari end of the bridge. After the ceremony, the bridge will be open to pedestrians.

The same evening at 5pm, the bridge opens for cyclists and you can join a family bike parade arranged by Helsinki Region Cyclists and partners to celebrate the new bridge! 🚴🏻🚴🏻🚴🏻

Korkeasaari Zoo will also celebrate the day with special discounts and offers. 🐆

ℹ️ Passenger traffic on the new light rail lines is scheduled to begin at the latest in early 2027. 🚉

Nearly 100 years ago, a Norwegian architect called Käpylä "the dimple on Helsinki's cheek." 🍊

This neighbourhood has one of the best underdog stories in the city. Helsinki was meant to host the 1940 Olympics, but the war had other plans. The city built the Olympic Village anyway to help support a growing population. Then in 1952, Helsinki finally got its Games, and Käpylä's Kumpula pool was built for training the athletes. 🏅

Then in the 1960s, someone wanted to demolish the iconic wooden neighbourhood. The locals said no. They won. Puu-Käpylä still stands today. 🙌

If you find yourself in Käpylä today here's a list of must-dos:

🪨 Taivaskallio: climb for some of the best views in the city
🏊 Kumpula outdoor pool: summer swimming, Helsinki style
🏡 Puu-Käpylä: stroll the wooden streets that refused to disappear
🍊 Kiska kiosk: bingo nights, summer gigs, good vibes
🍽️ Sophie: dinner sorted
