Hawk Owl in Oulu, Finland. There are plenty of Hawk Owls at the moment in Oulu region.

The details of the Owl plumage are very beautiful! Backlight makes the feathers "glow" so you can see all the patterns of the feathers. Photographed last winter in Kuusamo, Finland during Finnature Great Grey Owl photo tour.

Photographing Great Grey Owls during the winter months is definitely one of the highlights in Finland! Finnature tours last 3-4 days, so there's good chances to photograph also other birds like Hawk Owl, Golden Eagles, Waxwing, Dipper, Siberian Jay, Siberian Tit and some of the Grouse for example.

Usually the photo opportunities come between January-March. During the winter months it is snowy and wintery in Finland which offers a stunning set-up for taking pictures of birds! The attached picture was taken last winter in Kuusamo where we had outstanding sessions with this individual. All together there were at least half-a-dozen Great Grey Owls on that particular area.

Ural Owl youngster from last summer, photographed near Oulu Finland.

Every year we have some Ural Owls nesting in Oulu area. The chicks look like trolls and can sometimes be tricky to find when they have left the nest. The best time to see the Owls in Finland is in May and early June. This particular nesting in a nest box was very successful, with 4 fledged youngsters.

Tegnmalm´s Owl (Boreal Owl) is fairly common owl species in Finland and it uses nest boxes readily!

The opportunities for photographing Great Grey Owls can't get much better than this or what do you think?

We are getting good situations with Great Grey Owls daily, especially with this one cooperative individual. Here's a fresh photo from this weekend. Backlit owl together with a dark forest on the background = a good combo!

A Great Grey Owl photographed today in Kuusamo, Finland. Amazing birds!

The 3rd day of our Great Grey Owl photo trip produced again lots of good pictures. There are now many Great Grey Owls around. Today 2 individuals were present at our main photography location in the morning and one found by our customer (actually with a Red Squirrel on its claws!).

We spent the afternoon with our favorite co-operative owl. Today gave us an opportunity to try backlit conditions. At first the owl was resting for 1,5 hours but got active when the light was getting perfect.

It looks so good for the Great Greys in Kuusamo that we will launch third trip to photograph them! If you'd like to join us, please contact: [email protected]

We will confirm the dates for the 3rd trip very soon! We can honestly say that this winter has been one of the best with the Great Grey Owls!

During the last two days our group of photographers have been enjoying taking pictures of Great Grey Owls in Kuusamo, Finland. This was taken yesterday with the very last light in the afternoon.

Finnature has currently a small group of four photographers in Kuusamo. We spent yesterday in Utajärvi photographing Golden Eagles with good light. Late in the evening we arrived to Kuusamo. Today we started with photographing tame Siberian Jays and late in the afternoon our main target - the Great Grey Owl finally came out of the forest. Our trip continues until Sunday, so hopefully we will get more chances to improve the results with the GGOs! This Great Grey has been photographable almost daily. During windy days it might stay in the forest.
