Last night! The aurora danced for the first time this season in ! It was the 3rd aurora I spotted in August 2026, but the 1st one that you could clearly see dance with the naked eye! August is here! The month of the darkening nights, forests full of berries and the first of the season. Here is how August looks like in

Sun goes to sleep earlier each day, so that the nights can return!

Young reindeer grow fast and develop antlers, just like their parents.

It's time for a feast for wildlife - to store energy for the upcoming winter season.

Berries are free to collect from the forest! They can be a great source of vitamins in winter.

Beautiful sunsets return to Lapland, and the weather is still warm.

First auroras appear around 2nd or 3rd week of August after more than 4 months break.

The nights only start getting darker in August, so the window to see them is still rather short.

In the end of August it's already dark enough for good aurora shows! This is when I start my Aurora Hunting | Northern Lights tours!

One cool thing about is that it is situated quite close to . From the far north of , you can cross the border and reach completely different scenery within a couple of hours. I have done this many times often heading towards Varanger Fjord area. You can spend the day hiking above the coast, driving through small fishing villages (check the king crab!), stopping by quiet beaches and waterfalls – sometimes, even right by the road. In , the landscape is wide and open, while further west it becomes more mountainous & dramatic.

It is an easy way to combine two very different sides of the North in one trip. One day you are in the fells and forests of Finnish Lapland, and the next you are walking beside the .

You can also stay right at the border area, and make day trips to explore Northern Norway. One good option where I stayed a few times is The Authentic Arctic Boutique Resort in Utsjoki, Lapland 🇫🇮 – right near the beautiful Teno river – which works well as a base for exploring both Finnish Lapland and the Norwegian coast.
