How to go hiking in the Arctic winter... and not turn into a snowman! ⛄️❄️

If you are joining us for the Riisitunturi Snow Monsters Hike, you are about to step into one of the most surreal and photographed winter landscapes in Lapland! But to truly enjoy the 4km hike among these frozen giants, staying warm is the absolute key.

We’ll provide the snowshoes, the hot drinks, and the traditional Finnish campfire BBQ 🔥, but you need to bring the right layers! Here is the ultimate Arctic layering formula:

1️⃣ Base Layer: Always choose Merino wool or high-quality synthetic thermals. Never wear cotton! Cotton traps sweat and will make you freeze the second you stop walking.

2️⃣ Mid Layer: A thick fleece jacket or a cozy traditional wool sweater. This layer is what actually traps your body heat while we walk through the snowy trails.

3️⃣ Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof winter jacket and snow pants. The weather around the fells can be windy, so a good outer shield is your best friend!

4️⃣ Footwear & Extremities: Sturdy, insulated winter boots with good grip are a must! Add a warm beanie, a neck gaiter (much better than a long scarf), and mittens — mittens will always keep your hands warmer than fingered gloves!

💡 Pro Tip: You will get warm while hiking up the snowy hills! It’s totally normal to unzip your jacket while moving, and zip it back up when we stop at our wilderness camp for lunch by the open fire😉

Have you ever seen colors like this in the night sky? ✨

When most people think of the Northern Lights, they picture a bright green ribbon dancing in the dark. But during strong solar storms, the Arctic sky can actually explode into vibrant shades of pink, purple, red, and even blue!

Why does it change color? Here is the science behind the magic:

💚 Green (The most common): This happens when solar particles collide with Oxygen in our atmosphere at about 100–150 km above the Earth.

💖 Pink & Red (The rare beauties): These stunning colors appear during intense solar flares when particles reach much higher altitudes (above 200 km) and interact with Oxygen, or when they hit Nitrogen lower down.

💜 Purple & Blue (The ultimate rare sight): You only see these during very powerful Aurora displays! This happens when solar particles plunge deep into the atmosphere (below 100 km) and collide with Nitrogen.

What an unbelievable night under the lights this week! ✨
We rolled out with a full bus of adventurers, chased down the clear sky gaps, and the Arctic did not disappoint. The energy was electric from start to finish: cheers, laughs, and the green Aurora danced right above us.

The best part? Every single guest got their own high-res portraits under the Northern Lights so these memories stay vivid forever. 📸
