Did you know you can dig for your own amethyst in Lapland?🤩

Take a trip from Rovaniemi to the Amethyst Mine in Luosto, set high in the fell landscape. Once at the mine, you'll get the chance to search for amethyst yourself and see what you can find beneath the surface.

Part of the fun is not knowing what you'll uncover. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, and its colour can vary from pale violet to much deeper shades of purple.

Reindeer are a familiar sight in Lapland. But what does life with a herd actually look like? This experience takes the story a little further.

Join us for a Reindeer Husbandry Experience in Levi, where local reindeer herders will show you the secrets of traditional reindeer husbandry lifestyle.

The Reindeer Husbandry Experience starts with a 45-minute scenic drive to a local reindeer farm. There, a skilled reindeer herder will greet you and explain interesting details about reindeer and how they are cared for. You are welcome to ask questions about these amazing animals.

In the wilderness, near Olos and Pallas, you’ll see reindeer pastures with hundreds of reindeer and their herders. You will learn about modern reindeer care, feeding, and their yearly cycle.

Sitting in a snowmobile-pulled sledge, you’ll have the chance to watch a large herd of reindeer in their natural environment, perfect for taking photos.

To end the experience, your guide will arrange a gathering around a campfire, where you can enjoy warm drinks. Afterward, you’ll be taken back to your drop off point in Levi.

For many visitors, reindeer are one of the symbols of Lapland. This experience offers the chance to understand the people, knowledge, and daily work behind them. A few hours spent with local herders can give a completely different perspective on life in the North.

What is Ruska? 🍂

In Finland, we have a special word for the short period when nature changes colour before winter. That word is ruska.
 
It begins in the far north of Lapland and gradually moves south.
 
For a few weeks, the landscape changes almost daily. Birch trees turn bright yellow, while the low plants covering the forest floor shift to deep reds, creating the colourful landscapes Lapland is known for in autumn.

For many Finns, ruska marks the end of summer and the beginning of the long Arctic winter.
 
What makes ruska special is how brief it is. At its peak, the colours may only last a couple of weeks before autumn winds strip the leaves from the trees and the landscape begins preparing for winter.
 
If you’re visiting Lapland in September, you’ll probably hear locals talking about ruska. They’re talking about this short, colourful chapter between summer and winter.

How to spot the Northern Lights in Lapland?

✅ Wait for a dark, clear night.
✅ Head away from artificial lights.
✅ Look north, but keep an eye on the whole sky.
✅ Be patient. Auroras often appear when you least expect them.

And sometimes, all you need to do is look up.

Did you know?

🌌 No two aurora displays are ever exactly the same.
🌌 The colours are created when particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.
🌌 Green is the most common aurora colour seen in Lapland.
🌌 Northern Lights can appear more than 100 km above the Earth.
🌌 They can last for just a few minutes or continue dancing across the sky for hours.

🦌 Autumn is reindeer rutting season.
Male reindeer become more active as the mating season begins. Rutting season starts in the of September and it lasts until October-November. During the rutting season, it is best to give reindeer some extra space.

🍁 Ruska turns the landscape gold, orange and red.
The colours come from both trees and low-growing Arctic plants.

✨ Autumn marks the return of the Northern Lights.
As the nights grow darker, auroras become visible across Lapland again.

🫐 Many wild berries are harvested in autumn.
Lingonberries, bilberries and cloudberries are among the season’s most common picks.

❄️ Ruska doesn’t stay for long.
Soon, frosty mornings and the season’s first snowfall begin to transform the landscape again.
