On 19–20 June 2026, Finland celebrates one of its most loved summer traditions: Midsummer, known as Juhannus.

For many Finns, this is the moment summer truly begins.
As Midsummer approaches, cities become quieter as people head to lakeside cottages, forests, and nature to spend time with family and friends.

A typical Finnish Midsummer often includes:
🔥 Bonfires by the lake
🧖 Sauna sessions
🏊 Swimming in fresh water
🚣 Boating and outdoor activities
☀️ Long, bright nights under the Midnight Sun

The main celebrations take place on Midsummer Eve (Friday) and Midsummer Day (Saturday), when families and friends gather to enjoy Finland’s brightest days of the year.

And in Lapland, the experience feels even more magical. Around Midsummer, the sun barely sets, creating the famous “nightless night” that makes summer in the Arctic unlike anywhere else.
Would you rather spend Midsummer in a busy city or at a quiet lakeside cottage? 👇

Finland is often called the “Land of a Thousand Lakes.”
Sounds impressive, right?
But here’s the surprising part: Finland doesn’t have a thousand lakes.
It has around 188,000.
That’s why water is such a big part of life here. Lakes are everywhere- beside forests, next to villages, and often just a short walk from people’s homes.
In summer, many Finns head to their lakeside cottages to relax, enjoy a sauna, go swimming, or simply spend time in nature.
It’s one of the reasons Finland feels so peaceful. No matter where you are, you’re never too far from a lake.
So the next time you see a beautiful photo from Finland, remember: The country isn’t known for its lakes because it has a lot of them.
It’s known for its lakes because they are part of everyday life.
