Academic Adventures - the way to unique learning

Academic Adventures is an international training week for staff and teachers all over the world. Event has the purpose of spreading team learning model as wide as possible and getting new development ideas around it. We, as the event organizers, want to gather future learning forerunners and innovators together and encourage team learning model all

over the world and that way also to produce more unique learning experiences for students. Academic Adventures staff training week is also eligible for Erasmus+ staff training or teaching mobility grant, please apply at your home university.

Unfortunately, we have bad news to tell you. The situation is getting worse because of COVID-19, so sadly we have to cancel our event. We would have not wanted to do this, but we have to think about everyone's health.

The Whole Academic Adventures project team wants to thank you that you were interested in our event. We will come bigger and better next year!

If you already signed up and paid for the event, we will send you an e-mail about returning your money.

The schedule of the Academic Adventures

As you can see, we have planned a great week for you guys! You’ll be introduced in to the Finnish pedagogy, team learning, training sessions, projects made by teampreneurs and coaching.

Wednesday is all about projects. In the morning you will be able to chat wit the teampreneurs about their own projects and see things with their eyes. Later in the day we will visit alumni companies which will be revealed later.

We were going through a thesis about Academic Adventures and we found this.

"The main goal of Academic Adventures is to introduce the participants in to methods and tools of team learning. During the week the participants will meet with the students and coaches who have been benefiting team learning method and hearing their experiences about the model. The goal is to provide a practical totality, where you can see what is it like to be a coach and a coachee."

We realized that the purpose of this event is still the same after four years!

20 years of entrepreneurship and team leading

Proakatemia turned 20 years last September. We had a huge birthday party for our beloved school. This event was organized by the students of course!
Here is the aftermovie of Proakatemia 20 years.

In the event there was about 400 guests! Alumni, the currents students and invited guests. Proakatemias community is so valuable. You can go and ask any alumni to help you out with something and they will or at least guide you to a right person! People say that the community is what makes Proakatemia so successful.

How to make learning fun

One of our previous posts had a quote which said ”involve me and I learn”. People who applies to Proakatemia mostly want to learn in practice and that’s what Proakatemia is all about. Can you imagine how motivating it is to be able to learn new things you can take in action right away and get profit out of it!

Proakatemias total turn over in 2018 was over 1,2 million euros all made by the teampreneurs! For making this kind of revenue, you have to know what you’re doing and that’s where the learning comes in. We have to read about ten books each semester and write essays about them. The books you read are recommended to be about a topic that supports your business.
Our coaches tell us all the time that entrepreneurs are life long learners. 40% of the proakatemias graduates continues as entrepreneurs. Finland, a person with entrepreneurial attitude is really wanted in the working field which is why most of the graduates will be employed in leading positions in companies.

3 tips for team leading

1. Get to know your team
2. Communicate, communicate, communicate
3. Lead by example

Leadership is all about how you influence your team to achieve its goals. Take time to listen to your teammates. Find out what their issues and aspirations are. This way you’ll be able to build your leadership and guide your team in to success.

You can never bugle communication too much! Lack of communication is the one to build up barriers and issues in the team. Make expectations and responsibilities clear so everyone knows who’s d**g what, when and why.

Act like you want your team members to act. You are the example. Everything you do and say will impact the teams daily work habits and attitudes. Be open, honest and passionate. Treat everyone in the team fairly, with respect and without favoritism and you’ll find those behaviors returned. Make it clear you’re all there to work towards success for the big picture

How do you learn without lectures

In Proakatemia, we students learn in practice. To show that we are learning, we have to read books and write essays about them. By writing essays, you have to go through the thinking process again and write your thoughts too. We are also able to do podcasts instead of essays.

Here is one podcast that our third year students made. They are reflecting thins that they have learned in Proakatemia so far.

RINGING THE BELL

This is how we celebrate our achievements in Proakatemia. The bell is called " the bell of a thousand euros". In Proakatemia, when a team or project makes a thousand euros, people ring the bell and every one who hears it gives them applauses. We celebrate our achievements as a comminity.

Why does Proakatemia make so good results

This picture says it. The learning is so much deeper when you get to experience the thing is practice, rather than just sitting on lectures and trying to remember everything.

By involving the students in to the real business, they can adapt the things they learn from the books right away in to practice. In Proakatemia we don't have any classes. The students read books and write essays about them.

3 Tips for better teamwork

1. Set goals for your team
2. Foster a creative environment
3. Give constructive feedback consistently(and receive it)

Setting goals for your team is important for keeping up the motivation in the team. If you don't know what you are working towards for, it can be really frustrating.

Fostering a creative environment needs openness within the team, so people can throw ideas without being afraid that somebody will mock them about it. Everyone is one the same level and equal.

Give constructive feedback consistently(and receive it). This will keep the atmosphere more clear and prevents bigger issues from building up.

What happens in Academic Adventures

The structure of the week is almost done! We’ll give you a little peak of what is about to happen during the week.

From last years feedback we took advance on this kind of a task for you guys!

You get to experience an innovation process the same kind the first year students have to do before starting fully at Proakatemia.

In my teams case (we are now second year students), we had eight hours to produce something. Our coach told us ”produce” and then left. So we started talking what to do and we were completely confused about the situation. By the time went on, we had splitter in to smaller groups to execute the tasks we had share. We did a presentation about the fall and what we want to do in the future as a team.
