MEDIA RELEASE

Tourism Action Group Activated

Nadi, 26 February 2015 – The Tourism Action Group (TAG), an initiative of partners in the tourism industry, has been urgently activated to reassure and continue to encourage global travellers to come to Fiji.

TAG is made up of key representatives from each sector within the tourism industry to focus on immediate actions to reduce booking cancellations due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Winston to parts of Fiji. TAG’s focus is on educating travellers that much of Fiji’s tourism infrastructure is intact, and that the country was safe and ready to welcome visitors back. .

TAG is chaired by Mr Damend Gounder of Tour Managers Fiji, who in activating the team said, “Tourism is key to Fiji getting back on its feet after such a massive natural disaster, so industry partners have collectively agreed to activate TAG and ensure that this sector maintains momentum and continues to bring in visitors to Fiji.”

In addition to the swift activation of the TAG, The Chairman of the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange (BFTE) Trust, Mr David Voss also committed $100,000.00 to support immediate activities and get things started for TAG.

“We need to work hand-in-hand and TAG is the ideal response. We thank the BFTE Trust for supporting TAG with $100,000.00. The funds have set the ball rolling for us and our work starts right away,” Mr Gounder adds.

TAG has three key functional arms. These include:
1. Public Relations- to correct information about the status of the tourism infrastructure, properties, attractions and activities – most of which are intact.
2. Marketing- to push tactical marketing campaigns to ensure that Fiji remains an attractive destination
3. Finance- to secure funds for sustaining the operations of TAG through innovative activities with trade and wholesalers

Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways are members of the Tourism Action Group.

Bula Colleagues,

Over the last 4 days I have involved myself in various relief work for the affected victims of Cyclone Winston in the Ba, Tavua and Raki Raki areas.

The situation is shocking and I cannot imagine as to how some of the people survived and despite houses blown away from the foundation – what remains is the floor of buildings.
We have in the last 4 days distributed basic food items and water to many of the affected people.

When I had visited families on Monday, found out that children and elderly persons who have had no meals for two nights have nothing in hand for the next few nights so the first thought was to provide these as soon as possible.
From what I am also seeing is that all of Fiji has joined in with the government to lend a hand & support during these very difficult times in the lives of our people who have been badly affected by the cyclone.

Tour Managers, Yatule Resort and the Paradise Brides Team have organised another relief work this Saturday and we will be distributing food packs to another 300 families in the Ba- Raki Raki region.

Our staff/team have volunteered their time and the company is funding all expenses including the food packs for this relief assistance.

The above is information to all my friends and to advise that as your partners in Fiji we are involved heavily in trying to make life better for the affected people.

I got a lot of inspiration when I visited a couple in the outskirts of Raki Raki who had their home totally demolished. The roof and the side walls was no where in site and blown hundreds of metres away into scattered pieces. Not a single piece seemed reusable and the lady whose husband is paralysed due to a stroke some years ago despite all these in front of her said to me and the team “I have to rebuild, I have to overcome and I have to have hope in the future".

Let's get together Fiji to help "Re-build", our Island Home!

Bula Vinaka from Tour Managers Fiji!
A heartfelt thanks to you all for all your calls/ texts/ FB messages/emails during and after TC Winston! We are all safe and sound with not much damages this end however thoughts & prayers go out to the affected areas i.e. Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki on Viti-levu and the other islands. We are still facing issues with land lines and internet, mobile network and currently with no power but on generator. Thanking you in advance for your patience! :-)
