Alena Ditai is a cultural goods vendor at the Suva Market, she is. a weaver and she sells mats, voivoi, vau, and she sells masi and masi dyes in two colours, the black dye, that’s made from mangrove sap thats a liquid and dry clay in powder form.
Her stall # is 83-90, and she holds 8 spots that she pays a daily rate of $2.50 for each one. She took over her mum's stall in the late 90s. Her mother started as a vendor at the market in the mid 70s as a fruit and vegetable vendor, and changed to cultural goods in the mid 80s.
Alena is a second-generation vendor, like many people Iv met at the market. They’ve been here through coups, cyclones and COVID.
Whilst we talked this morning, Alena told me that cultural goods vendors at the market have a soli-club where they give varying amounts into a fund that she manages for the collective. Though members can withdraw small amounts during the course of the year, the soli is a Christmas fund. So vendors can have extra money for themselves and their families.
