🏸 BUILDING LOCAL CAPACITY: Badminton Fiji Strengthens Para-Badminton Infrastructure 🏸

Badminton Fiji is proud to announce a major milestone in our strategic workforce development! Ms. Chloe Kumar has successfully completed the intensive National Para-Badminton Classification Workshop (Level 1), significantly elevating our local technical capability to govern and grow adaptive sports.

Held in Melbourne, Australia (27–29 May 2026) ahead of the Australian National Para-Badminton Championships, this elite regional workshop was led by BWF International Classifiers Mr. Pinakin Godse and Ms. Carli Harris, alongside Badminton Australia Classification Lead Ms. Breanna Baardwijk.

📈 Upgrading Skills for Long-Term Impact
As part of a select cohort of 9 specialized physiotherapists from Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, and Fiji, Chloe underwent rigorous theoretical and practical training. The workshop focused heavily on:
* The Minimum Impairment Criteria (MIC) and athlete evaluation procedures.
* Sport Class System Management across all six para-badminton classes (WH1, WH2, SL3, SL4, SU5, and SH6).
* Real-time on-court observations and practical athlete assessments during live elite competition.

By investing in specialized medical and technical skills, Badminton Fiji is building self-reliance, and securing a sustainable pathway for inclusive sport in our nation.

🌟 A Proven Leader in Fiji Sports

Chloe brings an exceptional dual perspective to this technical role as both a medical professional and an elite athlete. Her remarkable badminton pedigree includes:
* National Rep & Elite Athlete: Currently ranked Fiji No. 1 in Mixed Doubles and No. 3 in both Women's Singles and Doubles.
* Sport Administrator: Vice President of the Nadi Badminton Club and Fiji Para-Badminton Development Officer.
* Educator: Certified BWF Development & Shuttle Time Teacher.
* Clinical Expertise: Professional Physiotherapist, now uniquely qualified as a certified Level 1 National Classifier.

From Chloe Kumar:
"What I appreciated most about this course was the opportunity to strengthen my understanding of para sport and athlete classification, and as a Physiotherapist by profession, see firsthand how these processes create fair and meaningful opportunities for athletes with disabilities. The knowledge gained will be directly applied to the growth of Para-Badminton in Fiji, helping us identify, support, and develop athletes while ensuring they can participate and compete within an inclusive and equitable sporting environment."

🚀 Looking Ahead: Delivering on Our Strategic Pathway

This upskilling initiative yields immediate, tangible results for our local structures. Badminton Fiji will officially deploy our new domestic capability this coming September!

We will conduct our very first locally led athlete classification process—spearheaded by Chloe—prior to the Fiji Para-Badminton National Championships 2026. This ensures fair, equitable, and internationally aligned competition classes for all our local athletes with disabilities.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the BWF — Badminton World Federation for funding and certification support and the Badminton Oceania Confederation (BOC) for excellent regional coordination and delivery.

Together, we are building local expertise for a self-sustaining, inclusive sporting future. 🇫🇯🏸

🏸 **CONGRATULATIONS SWAMI VIVEKANANDA COLLEGE!** 🥈🥉🏆

Badminton Fiji would like to extend a massive congratulations to Swami Vivekananda College from Nadi for their phenomenal performance at the 29th Annual Badminton Fiji Secondary Schools Tournament held recently across the FMF Gymnasium and Yat Sen Hall in Suva!

Competing in a massive field of over 160 players from 18 schools across Suva, Lautoka, Lekutu (Bua), and Nadi, the SVC shuttlers truly shone. As highlighted by The Fiji Times, in just their second year of participation in the national tournament, the SVC contingent made a massive statement, rewriting their previous standings (where the boys finished 6th and girls finished 4th last year) to bring home an incredible haul of national medals:

**Teams Competition:**
🥈 Silver – Girls Teams (National Runners-Up in a thrilling finale!)
🥉 Bronze – Boys Teams (Securing an incredible 3rd place finish!)

**Individuals Competition:**
🥇 Gold – Boys U17 Individuals
🥇 Gold – Boys U15 Individuals
🥈 Silver – Girls U17 Individuals
🥉 Bronze – Girls U15 Individuals

As SVC student Mingli Lu shared with *The Fiji Times*, competing against the traditional powerhouse Suva schools was tough, but this incredible achievement is a testament to the team's immense growth, discipline, and hard work during regular training sessions at Nadi Muslim College. You have done the Western Division immensely proud!

We extend our deepest gratitude to Christopher Li, Badminton Fiji Vice President for Western Schools and President of the Nadi Badminton Club. This historic advancement is the direct outcome of his months of strategic planning, commitment, and grassroots development. As Chris rightly noted, while there is still a skill gap to bridge, a solid foundation has now been laid for Western schools to consistently challenge for the top spots!

Last but certainly not least, a huge Vinaka Vakalevu to the massive contingent of parents and guardians who made the arduous journey from Nadi to Suva. Your presence, sacrifices, and unwavering support from the sidelines truly fueled the team's historic success.

Thank you, SVC, for elevating the standard of secondary schools badminton in Fiji. The West is rising! 🌟🇫🇯

The 29th Secondary Schools Badminton Tournament wrapped up on Saturday 30 May with individual finals, and medals ceremony. A fabulous three days of competition seeing 18 Schools participate.

The team comps had concluded on Friday and Yat Sen School (YSS) definitely lived up to their powerhouse reputation by sweeping the boys and girls team division trophies, continuing their impressive multi-year streak. ISS came 2nd in the boys, and SVC in 3rd. For the girls division, it was the other way around, with SVC taking 2nd place, and ISS 3rd.

It was fantastic to see the individual events spread the glory around, giving schools like Swami Vivekananda College (SVC), International School Suva (ISS), Nehru Memorial, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School (MGM), and St. Joseph's Secondary School (SJSS) a well-deserved moment on the podium.

The talent depth across the U15, U17, and U19 divisions is clearly growing, making for an incredibly exciting wrap-up to the event. And for us at Badminton Fiji, very excited for what the future holds with this amazing talent pool !!

Of the 9 medals up for grabs in the Girls Categories- U15, U17, U19 - YSS won 4, SVC won 2, and ISS, SJSS, and MGM taking 1 away.

With the Boys Categories, of the 9 medals, YSS took away 3, ISS and SVC walked away with 2 each, and both Nehru and MGM with 1 medal each.

We had 162 players in total (slight decrease from registration) of which 51% were girls, and 49% boys. So thrilled to see increasing girls participation in Badminton.

NEW PHOTOS ADDED

// Volunteers are the soul of sports in Fiji //

The 29th Annual Badminton Fiji Secondary Schools Tournament was a smashing success due to the dedication of volunteers.

There are too many to name and some who went far beyond the game to save or elevate the Tournament to great heights.

We had these world-class VICTOR Umpire Chairs, Poles, and Nets sitting in deep storage for years. Volunteers helped to transport and assemble them with the goal of having the young players at the 2026 Tournament to be the first Fijians to use them.

Volunteers brought tape, laser light tools and marked the 11 new badminton courts, delivered food, cleaned the venues, picked up fellow Volunteers, and made 100 copy printouts of Score sheets at 7am to deliver by our daily 8am Officials Briefing meetings.

Several attended the Badminton New Zealand Online Umpire Training Workshop to gain confidence in Umpiring the Tournament. MOST OF ALL, there was an abundance of great ideas and laughter especially during the baby-mix debriefing sessions.

// Aloesi (Raze) is 1 of the most consistent players from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, Suva //

Turns up, day after day, for all the training sessions and even the night-time Socials (with his mixed doubles partner in crime Jazzlyn) so we're very thankful to Mum and Dad for all the support.

// Western Schools bring the heat to Schools Badminton //

Central College Lautoka, Swami Vivekananda College and 3 new Western Schools (Natabua, Agape Mission, and Nadi Sangam added a fresh new dimension to the 29th Annual Secondary Schools Tournament 2026.

We're really impressed by the huge jump in quality of play, fitness, court IQ with credit to Nadi Badminton Club running weeks of BWF Development & Shuttle Time training at SVC and Nadi Muslim College courts.

We want to arrange the delivery of some of the professional VICTOR Umpire Chairs, poles, nets, shuttles, and rackets to the Western Schools to further boost their numbers.
