🇬🇧 We couldn’t let the opportunity pass to talk about the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, to mark Pope Leo XIV’s visit to France 😉
From what has become the largest Gothic palace in the Western world, seven popes (Clement V, John XXII, Benedict XII, Clement VI, Innocent VI, Urban V, Gregory XI) and two schismatic popes (Clement VII and Benedict XIII) made Avignon the capital of Christendom between 1305 and 1394.
More than 700 years later, the Palais des Papes still captivates visitors with its main courtyard, which serves as the venue for the festival every summer, its cloister, its frescoes, the Saint-Martial Chapel, the Pope’s Chamber, the Deer Chamber, its grand kitchen with its immense pyramidal fireplace, the Grand Tinel, the Clementine Chapel, and the Pope’s Garden...
A papal history of which the people of Avignon and the Vaucluse are proud, having been under papal administration in the Comtat Venaissin from 1274 to 1791.
