Every spring, the greater flamingos of the Camargue enter their breeding season. While their synchronised courtship displays are a familiar sight at the Parc Ornithologique ithologique du Pont de Gau, witnessing and photographing the actual mating process is rather less common. These images capture part of that sequence, offering a fascinating glimpse into the breeding behaviour of one of the Camargue’s most iconic birds.

Wings Fully Open
The male spreads his wings to maintain balance, revealing the striking scarlet and black flight feathers. This dramatic moment is one of the most visually impressive stages of the mating process.

The Beginning
Before mounting, the male gently rubs his chest against the female’s back. This subtle gesture marks the beginning of the mating sequence.

Mounting Begins
The male starts to mount the female, carefully finding his balance as the mating process begins.

Mating Continues
The mating sequence continues as the pair remain connected. A brief but important moment in the breeding cycle of the greater flamingo, one of the Camargue’s most iconic birds.

There’s something special about photographing a moment… but something even more meaningful about giving it back.

This was from our White Horses workshop in the Camargue — a portrait of Tessa with Gines, a quiet, honest moment between them. Seeing it printed, framed, and then handed over… that’s where it really comes alive.

The surprise, the smile, the connection — that’s the part you don’t get from a screen.

Photography doesn’t end when you press the shutter. Sometimes, that’s just the beginning.

Each June, we host a small, immersive photography workshop in southern France, with the option to stay together at a beautiful private domaine—sharing the experience, the atmosphere, and the creative process as a group. The French Experience is designed for photographers who want time, guidance, and a more thoughtful way of working—not a rushed tour. Based around Carcassonne and the surrounding region, the week blends location, culture, and photography in a relaxed, supportive setting.

At the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau in the Camargue, flamingos are rarely still. Feeding, stretching, cleaning and preening — their movements are quick and often unpredictable.

To capture the atmosphere rather than freeze the moment completely, I worked with a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/200 sec. This allows a point of sharpness while the wings and water droplets retain a sense of motion, giving a feeling for the energy of the bird as it preens.

Moments like this are fleeting, but that is part of the joy of photographing these remarkable birds in the Camargue.

Normally when I photograph the white horses of the Camargue, it’s all about movement — thundering hooves, flying water, and the raw energy of horses in full stride.

Today was different.

Today I spent quiet time with Tessa and Gines, one of her beautiful horses. No drama, no speed — just the calm understanding between them. The way the horse leans into her hand, the way she holds the rope with quiet confidence, the way they move together as if it’s the most natural thing in the world.

Sometimes the most powerful images are not about action at all, but about connection.

The bond between human and horse is something ancient, patient, and deeply respectful — and moments like this remind me that the soul of the Camargue isn’t only found in the gallop.

It’s also found in the quiet.

Caught in golden light… it almost feels like they’re sharing a private joke. 😄

The Camargue workshops aren’t just about power and drama — they’re about these fleeting, character-filled moments that reveal the personality of these incredible horses. Between the thunder of hooves and the quiet pauses, you’ll capture high-quality, expressive images that go far beyond the expected.

Beauty, humour, connection — and world-class photographs to take home with you.

Power, elegance, and raw emotion — the White Horses of the Camargue offer images of exceptional quality. In these water-charged encounters, we often work in Black & White, removing colour to emphasise form, texture, muscle, spray, and the timeless dialogue between horse and landscape. You’ll learn to anticipate movement, read shifting light, and position yourself for maximum impact. And while the surge through the water brings adrenaline, laughter, and pure energy, it’s often the quieter moments — a still gaze, horses standing in reflected light, the subtle tension before movement — that add equal power, depth, and storytelling weight to the final image.
