Plot twist: the Basque Country isn't just about pintxos and casual charm, it's got Michelin stars! 🌟

The chefs here take their craft seriously: local ingredients, technique that matters, food that changes your evening plans from "nice dinner" to "we're still talking about this next month". The Basque Country has built a serious reputation for gastronomic excellence! Here's the thing: You don't need to dress up or book six months ahead, the food is exceptional, the service is warm and the vibe is “Basque”. Meaning genuine, unpretentious, and absolutely committed to making your meal unforgettable. 😎 Biased? Of course!

Pair it with Irouléguy w**e and finish with local cheese. 🧀🍷 This is fine dining that doesn't take itself too seriously, just excellence done simply! 🤤

Sit down, look up, and let 800 years of stone tell you something you've never heard before. ✨

“Luminiscence” just arrived at Bayonne's UNESCO-protected Cathedral! This is history as light, sound, and live emotion crashing together under Gothic vaults for 45 minutes.

Here's what happens: you settle into a seat in the nave. The Basque choir starts with Agur Jaunak, the archetypal Basque song that roots everything in place. Then Anne Etchegoyen's voice (a Basque folk legend) guides you through the cathedral's story while video mapping transforms the stone into a living fresco.

Four acts. Four journeys through time. Massive projections dancing on medieval walls. The live choir's voices resonating through the acoustics like the building itself is singing! 🎶❤️

👀 The practical bit:
45 minutes
All ages welcome (kids under 2 free, on a lap)
Narration's in French but honestly, the visuals speak every language
Until end of August: daily shows - In September: Friday & Saturday only

Small town. Big history. Zero crowds.

Saint-Palais sits in the heart of Basse-Navarre where the Camino de Santiago routes cross: pilgrims have been passing through here for centuries on their way to Spain. But most tourists miss it entirely. Their loss!

✨ Your morning:
Wander the streets on foot. Pop into the Espace Bideak and Musée de Basse-Navarre. You'll trace Basque identity, local traditions, centuries of character. It's intimate, it's real, it actually tells the story!

🚌 Getting there is dead easy with TXIK TXAK:
From Bayonne: Bus #41, stop at Eglise, Saint-Palais
From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: Bus #63, same stop

This is what the interior tastes like when you slow down!

One bite: that's all it takes to understand the Basque Country! 🧀

Ossau-Iraty is 500 000 sheep, 1100 passionate breeders, and a flavour that tastes like mountain air. It's been PDO-protected since 1996, which means it's the real deal: made in the Pyrenees, with local ewe's milk, and made the proper way!

Look for the red band on the label and the sheep's head stamp: that's your guarantee of authenticity. 👀

How to taste it right:

1️⃣Look at it. Smell it (seriously, close your eyes)
2️⃣ Feel the texture
3️⃣ Then bite, and let it speak!

Alone is best, or pair it with black cherry jam, quince jelly and fresh greens. 🤤

August 15th. Mauléon-Licharre. This is where the Basque Country shows you how it actually works! 🧵

The “Fête de l'espadrille” is the headline, but it's really about something bigger: real people, real crafts, real traditions that refuse to disappear. **Y**our day in Mauléon 👇

☀️ Morning
Watch sandaliers work on-site reconstructing the entire espadrille process. Rope sole, canvas upper and every stitch visible. They'll explain everything! Taste regional food at the stalls.

👀 Mid-morning
Pelota match on the fronton in 3 words: fast, intense, beautiful. Or join the 5km walk in espadrilles (yes, people actually do this)! Listen to the Xiberoko Zohardia choir singing in Euskara.

😋 Lunch
Sit down for proper food: local “jambon”, Ossau-Iraty cheese (the real stuff from shepherds here), txakoli w**e. Everything around you comes from the mountains outside town!

✨ Evening
Back to the plaza. Basque strength competitions, dancing, regional products and chants until 9pm!

This is living culture, not preserved, not performed for tourists. Just... Soule being Soule. Milesker, Mauléon. ❤️

In summer, the mountains invite you to get some fresh air, walk, picnic and seek coolness! But it remains a living, fragile and shared natural space. 💚 Before leaving, adopt the right gestures:

☀️ Check the weather, thunderstorms are common in summer and choose a route adapted to your level

💧 Avoid swimming in mountain lakes: these are sensitive, sometimes dangerous natural environments that are essential to biodiversity

🐑 Walk around herds calmly and keep your distance, especially in the presence of guard dogs

🌸 Stay on the marked trails to preserve the flora and limit erosion

♻️ Bring back all your waste, even biodegradable waste, to leave the mountain clean

Forget the beaches, this week, go inland! 💚

July in the Pyrenean villages is where the real Basque Country lives. Green hills still dripping from spring rain, quiet trails… And locals who say “Egun on”!

Start in Espelette and grab fresh piment d'Espelette (peak season, fire-bright red). In Sare, hike to the Grottes: limestone caverns, cool air and that proper mountain magic! Stop in Ainhoa for Ossau-Iraty cheese, “jambon”, a glass of Irouléguy w**e on a terrace that overlooks nothing but hills. 👌

This is slow food country: REAL food! Food that took effort, farmers, shepherds, producers who know exactly what they're doing. Eat standing at a bar counter with locals, chat with the “fromager” and ask the restaurant owner what their grandmother used to make! ✨

The coast will still be there next week. But this? This is the Basque Country only insiders know. 😎

You don't need fluent Basque, but these 10 words? They'll change everything! 👀

Locals absolutely melt when you try. Seriously! Even butchering the pronunciation gets you instant points. 😉

Here's your survival kit:
👋 Good morning : Egun on (egoun on)
☀️ Good afternoon : Arratsalde on (aratchaldéon)
🌙 Good evening/night : Gau on (gaoon)
✌️ Goodbye : Ikus arte (iqouch arté)
💚 Thank you : Milesker (milechquer)
🙏 Sorry/Forgiveness : Barkatu (barcatou)
☺️ Please : Plazer baduzu (plasser badoussou)
🙂‍↕️ Yes : Bai (baï)
🙅 No : Ez (es)

That's it! That's your toolkit. Walk into a bar, order a txakoli, and say "Milesker" like you mean it: the bartender will smile and you'll feel like you belong.

The Basque language is alive here: spoken, sung, celebrated! Trying matters more than getting it perfect. 😎

Twenty minutes from Bayonne + zero tourists = welcome to Charnégou (literally “mixed blood”)!

North of the Basque Country, where Basque, Landaise and Béarnaise cultures collide: the locals call it "the confidential territory” and… they're not wrong! 😉

Grab a bike and follow the Adour river through green plains and wild meadows. Pedal through Urt, Mouguerre… Stop under a tree and just breathe. Then slip into Labastide-Clairence: a 14th-century bastide town, one of France's most beautiful villages (actually classified). Medieval streets, basque architecture and artisans working like they always have. Stop at Bardos and visit Maison Montauzer. They've been making proper “Jambon de Bayonne” the old way for generations! You can see their production atelier, taste it fresh and understand what real takes time. Keep going. Bidache and its fortress, a lake for swimming if the mood strikes.

This isn't an Instagram checklist! It's quiet roads, genuine encounters, and understanding how the Basque Country actually lives. ❤️

Early July is the sweet spot of the summer ☀️

School holidays are kicking off, summer officially owns the calendar now but here's the thing: before August madness arrives, there's this perfect window where everything aligns. 👀
The weather's warm, the beaches have families and joy AND breathing room, and the vibe is celebratory! THIS is the week to arrive. Grab a table by the sea, swim in water that's actually warm (22°C+) and hike in evening light that lasts until 10pm. 🥰

July is when the Basque Country shows you what summer's supposed to feel like!
