What an absolute treat to visit the Stonemason’s Workshop at Canterbury Cathedral, one of only nine in-house mason teams at UK cathedrals, and be shown around by head mason John Crump.

Most of these photos show plaster maquettes of new grotesque designs. Note the beaver, recently reintroduced to Kent, and the chough, which looks like a raven/crow. Choughs (chuffs) are said to have stepped in the blood of St Thomas Becket - hence their red feet.

On Saturday, I went on 2026’s final ✨ Esoteric Isle ✨ Tarot History tour, which covers sites associated with the creators of the Smith-Waite Tarot Deck (aka Rider Waite deck). I knew nothing about the topic, and came with away with a rich appreciation for the art and beauty of the cards, as well as a sense of wonder for the people in the UK Tarot Community. This was also my first introduction to Pamela Colman-Smith, aka Pixie - what a fascinating woman.

“What do you do for work?”
“Well, today I searched through the V&A Catalogue to find a depiction of Jesus showing us his side wound so I could talk about the medieval cult of side-wound worship and how Jesus’s side wound was depicted as a va**na in medieval manuscripts.”

By the way, I found this statue - the final image- that I’m going to use as the catalyst for this topic in my upcoming “Morbid & Gruesome Medieval V&A” video.

(Big up to my girl Julian of Norwich, 14th century anchoress, who wrote about Jesus inviting her to enter his side wound to reach his Sacred Heart.)

The Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition opened to the public today at the British Museum- come along with me!

It really is wonderful, but I do think an audio accompaniment or regular signage will be sorely missed by some visitors.
