Yet another great reason to spend time in France!!!

Yet another great reason to spend time in France!!!

France produces more than 1,000 types of cheese and people still argue over which is best.

Cheese in France is not just food. It’s tied to regions, family traditions, farming history, and serious local pride. From creamy Camembert in Normandy to strong blue cheeses from the mountains of Auvergne, almost every part of the country has its own specialty that locals will insist tastes better than anywhere else.

What surprises many visitors is how different French cheeses can taste depending on where you are. A Rocamadour goat cheese eaten in a small village in southwest France often tastes completely different from the version sold in supermarkets abroad. Even the season matters because the flavor changes depending on what the animals are eating throughout the year.

Some of the oldest French cheeses date back centuries. Morbier originally used a layer of ash through the middle to separate morning and evening milk curds during production. Munster was developed by monks in the Vosges mountains during the Middle Ages. And Roquefort style blue cheeses have been aged in natural limestone caves for generations because the cave humidity helps create the mold that gives the cheese its flavor.

Once you spend time in France, you also realize cheese follows unwritten rules. Cheese is usually served before dessert, not alongside the main course. Locals often buy it from small fromageries rather than supermarkets. And asking for your cheese cold straight from the fridge is one of the fastest ways to ruin the flavor according to most French people.

Which French cheese would you try first?

Our lovely holiday apartment in Carteret is surrounded by seaside villages and - of course - some of the best local markets and artisan cheese makers you’ll ever experience. Think creamy Camembert, rich Livarot, and fresh baguettes still warm from the boulangerie just down the road 😊

Visit our profile page for details of how to book a visit!

France has over 1,000 types of cheese, and the first time you see a proper fromagerie, it hits you fast. Rows of soft, hard, aged, fresh, mild, and very strong cheeses, all with names most visitors haven’t heard before. It’s not just variety for the sake of it. Each one comes from a specific region, often with its own method and history behind it.

What makes it tricky is that there’s no quick way to choose. You’re usually expected to say what you like, how strong, how creamy, whether it’s for later or right away. The person behind the counter will guide you, but they’ll also expect you to have at least a rough idea. That’s where a lot of visitors freeze.

Locals don’t try to know everything either. They just know what they like and ask what’s good that day. Cheese changes with the season, the aging process, and even the weather, so the “best” option is always moving.

If you’re visiting, don’t overthink it. Pick two or three, try something unfamiliar, and see where it goes. That’s usually how people start figuring it out.

Would you try something completely new here, or play it safe with what you know?

Bayeux is well worth visiting, and it’s within driving distance from our holiday apartment in Carteret!

You can find more details about the apartment and its surroundings in our comments section below.

Bayeux tends to be the place people pass through quickly, but it always rewards anyone who gives it more than an afternoon. The stone streets, the river paths, and the cathedral all sit exactly where they have for centuries, offering a rare look at a Normandy town that didn’t have to rebuild after 1944. It means every corner has a story that hasn’t been polished or recreated.

The trip from Paris takes about two hours by train, which makes Bayeux one of the simplest escapes from the capital. Once you’re there, everything sits within walking distance, so exploring feels easy. The area around the old water mills often ends up being a favorite because it’s quieter and gives a better feel for the town’s pace.

Many visitors are surprised by how close the British Military Cemetery and the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy are to the center. Both add a deeper understanding of the region, especially if the D Day beaches are part of the plan. Even without the tapestry, Bayeux offers more than most expect, and this year is a good time to see it with fresh eyes.
