Always love to stop at the Col des Montets and really interesting to see the progress on the renovation of the old “welcome” chalet and addition of a boardwalk lookout point to the lake. What is lost in making it a bit less natural is, I think, more than made up for in the better access, especially as it’s so close to the road anyway. And much better to encourage people away from the actual lakeside which is pretty fragile ecologically and used to get quite a lot of damage in the summer. The chalet’s terraces look much better as well, in big granite steps - I think it all looks like a major improvement and look forward to the re-opening…a good month or two to go yet for the chalet I’d say but the boardwalk is usable now and makes the (classic) view much more accessible.

Refuge du Lac Blanc opens in winter for the first time ever! Lovely Himalayan ambiance with friendly welcome from Kusang Sherpa and the French/ Nepali team 🇫🇷 🇳🇵. Ski touring access only, what an absolute treat to be up here without the crowds, a fabulous day out with Neil Hitchings :)
