It’s been a long time since I’ve posted, but last week we had a Florian and Tilio come to fish for 24 hours. It gave me a chance to see if the fish I stocked in January 2023 were gaining weight (they are). Thee guys had 13 runs and landed 12 fish, they picked up some smaller 3 x stockies 6-8lb, but the rest ranged from 16.5lb up to 31.5lb.
The guys will be back to fish again and I can track weight gains.

January saw a hive activity here, lake emptying started on the first day of the new year, small amount of rubbish removed, some silt has been evacuated and most importantly the surviving carp stock has been counted and weighed. A total of 12 specimens, two of which are 30+’s and 20 fish between 10 - 20lb. Plus there’s my stockies from 2 - 10lb (40)
Timing was just right and a week on non stop heavy rain saw that lake refilled more rapidly than normal, filling this we’ve had hardly a drop since!
I have also taken delivery of an additional 20 carp between 17 and 23lb.

All that remains now is to feed them all well over the coming year, this has already started but the frequency of feeding will be increased over the coming months.

Unfortunately 2022 hasn’t been a good year for us here at Kingfisher Lake. With France suffering its worst heatwave for 500 years (according to the press). Being located in one of the affected areas we endured the brunt of the extreme heat and in late July the lake temperature reached 28.7° and thus had significant oxygen crash. The result was devastating on the specimen carp, the tench and predator fish. Forty six carp in total, eight of which were 40+, twelve 30+ the rest being made up of teens and twenties. I managed to save some, but in 24 hours we were effectively wiped out.

It took a number of weeks for all this to be absorbed and then decide what to do. We have waited while anglers who were booked to fish here were found alternate venues, that has now been completed after a considerable amount of work by the whole Angling Lines team.

Winter will see the lake emptied so that a stock count can take place. October 6th I’m meeting to discuss 25 new small/medium sized carp for 2022, I’m also in the process of getting a surface aerator to augment the existing aeration system, if all goes well, additional larger stock will be added in winter 2023. Therefor we will not be offering carp fishing holidays until April 2024. We will only be offering the gîte for non-fishing holidays during that interim period.

I will be posting a few progress updates over the next 18 months so those that are interested can follow the progress.

Following reports that the crayfish in the lake had been particularly active and were hitting anglers boilies I planned a trip out to go buy a crayfish trap to see if it was just a particular bait they were liking or whether there was a bigger issue.

At my local tackle shop I was told that they had sold out of crayfish traps due to unprecedented demand in our region, while chatting with the shop owner he was telling me that this year there’s been an explosion in the crayfish population in the rivers, streams and lakes. I explained my situation and he agreed to call me when more stock arrived. Next day I got that call but was told “be quick”! I was quick and I bought three traps.

I started trapping the crays two weeks ago today, emptying them every 12 hrs, each trap had between 15 - 18 crays. After a week of those sort of numbers the catch rate fell to 20 crays every 12 hrs, today (day 14) I’m trapping 15 crayfish every 24 hrs. So it seems that I’ve definitely had an impact on the crays.

The good news is that last weeks anglers reported no issues with boilies being hit by crays, the bad news was the heatwave that they endured made the fish turn off and hide.

I must be one of the few people who are wishing for some rain and less blazing sunshine, currently lake level is down by approx 30cm !

Last week we had Carl, Lee and Bill fishing the lake and it was a hard week given the rising temperatures, sadly the guys didn’t manage to break the 30lb barrier, but hopefully they still managed to enjoy their stay.

A few pictures of the late 20’s that they did manage to tempt out.

Not really what I want to see ( from a fishing perspective) but Mrs E will be loving this heatwave. It’s going to make the fishing hard - that I can say.

Sadly there’s nothing I can do about the weather……. To be honest I’d be grateful for a shower or two!

Last week we had Aaron, Matt and Lewis fishing the lake, temperatures are on the rise again so again the guys spent the hottest section of the days cooling off in the pool. Aaron claimed “most species” caught and Lewis took an early lead with a 28lb Grassie and then a 39lb Common, but Matt overtook that with a 42lb Mirror (Bonnie) plus Matt banked a few mid twenties, Lewis then had a late charge banking a beautiful 30lb Mirror and a 40lb Mirror that turned out to be Stealth…… her first outing this year!

All the females are a tad down on weight as they are post spawn (you can see the rippling) but otherwise in great condition and they should be getting their heads down now.

Great set of guys to have come fish with us, you’d be welcome back anytime 👌

Last week we had the absolute pleasure of having Jeff and Sandy come fish the lake. Due to some very hot weather Jeff & Sandy opted to be very selective over the hours they fished. Jeff’s watercraft was exceptional and he spent hours watching the fish moving around for a number of hours before putting his rods in. Shortly after Jeff banked one of the big Grassies, this one was 43lb 7oz and is a new 40+ now called Snooky. She is now the seventh fish confirmed to be over 40lb.
Jeff and Sandy caught every day, Sandy improving her PB with a 27lb Mirror and Jeff banked another Mirror that was 43lb 11oz which I think is Martha.
Fabulous couple and I’m very pleased they caught some of the specimens. 👌

Last week we had Joe, Rachel and Emily fishing the lake last week, here’s Joes three thirties out of the 18 fish he landed, he lost two at the net which is always tough.

This weeks anglers Simon and Martha have seen a few of the lakes bigger specimens. Simon got off to a good start at the beginning of the week picking up Bump and then catching a Mirror that is a new 40lb’er that he’s named Martha ( Now that’s romance!! ).
Martha (not the fish) had a slower start, she was aiming to catch something over 20lb and had a couple of double figure carp and a good Tench but had to wait a few days before she tempted a 28lb fish and then banked Bonnie at just over 44lb (post spawn weight). As they say, all good things come to those who wait.
Bravo to the both of you, it’s been an absolute pleasure having you here and Alfie & Matilda too!

I’m chuffed for you that you both caught 40’s……. And that you’ve proved there are now definitely six fish over 40 in there 👍👍

What a week it’s been!, Chris and Nathan have been here and managed a first. They banked the largest specimen of all three types of carp in the lake, Mitsi the Common (42lb 6oz), Bonnie the Mirror (48lb 8oz) and the biggest Grass carp called Mai, fell to Nathan and weighed in at 47lb 8oz.
I can’t include the video of Nathan’s Grassie, so will put it in the comments.

It’s been a pleasure having you come and fish Kingfisher Lake gents, you’d be welcomed back anytime.

Stealth is yet to come out and I’m still getting to grips with the weight gains after my post winter feeding regime. 😯

Today we welcomed Chris and Nathan and despite some of the carp spawning there are still fish on the feed.

Chris has banked two and lost two already and his second fish was Mitsi the Common, it seems I made a mistake identifying the 39lb 1oz Common that came out two weeks ago, it turns out that wasn’t Mitsi, this was and she weighed in at 42lb 6oz.

She’s the lakes biggest Common and well and truly over the 40lb mark. That’s now a minimum of 5 40lb+ fish in there.

What a start, well done Chris!
