Last weekend, we were very pleased to accompany the Tobins from London, England around the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield.
It was a particularly rainy day. However, this did not dampen our enthusiasm to visit the battlefield, quite the opposite actually. With only a short time of rain, the trenches were already quite full of water, which allowed our visitors to better comprehend and appreciate the difficulties that the soldiers of the Great War faced on a daily basis.
As our guide pointed out: "We've been out here for about an hour and we are already cold, wet and our shoes and clothes soaked. We'll soon be heading back to a warm room, good food and drink and dry clothes. For those who were out here between 1914-1918, there was no such escape."
