After travelling around France for 35 years and never returning to the same gîte twice, our recent February guests have just booked their third stay at Quai du Val. That honestly means the world to us.

They mentioned the peaceful hours spent watching the River Rance drift by through the big windows, and the beautiful riverside walk from Léhon into Dinan.

It’s a walk we still love ourselves… especially knowing there are plenty of great restaurants waiting at the port when you arrive.

Feeling a little blue with all these grey, wet days? Winter by the sea in February holds its own kind of magic, so when the sun returns (because it always does), here’s a lovely little trip to keep in mind.

At Saint-Lunaire, on the Grande Plage, the sea pulls way back at low tide and suddenly the beach feels enormous. Sand stretches out in every direction, rocks appear where waves were not long before. It’s calm, open and a little bit unreal.

On clear winter days, you can see all the way across the bay to Saint-Malo, sharp against the horizon. No crowds. No noise. Just space… space to wander, to pause, to notice the small things: shells half-buried in the sand, the edge of the water slowly shifting, the rhythm of the sea breathing in and out.

And if you’re here with your dog, it’s an ideal destination 🐾 Pets are allowed on the beach in winter, making those long low-tide walks even better.

This is the kind of place made for slow meandering. No destination, no timetable. February suits it perfectly. There’s no rush, just being there, wrapped up against the breeze, letting the coast do what it does best.

The sun may be hiding for now… but when it returns, this is exactly where you’ll want to be!

🇬🇧 Clear February days usually mean one thing for us: Dinard!

The coastal path from Plage de l’Écluse to La Pointe de la Malouine is one of our favourite seaside walks in Brittany. Fresh sea air, big coastal views and that quiet feeling of just you and the waves.

Top tip: check the tide times before you go as high tide feels dramatic and close. Low tide opens up the coastline and brings instant calm.

Simple, beautiful and always worth it.

🇫🇷 Les journées claires de février ont généralement une seule signification pour nous : Dinard !

Le sentier côtier qui relie la plage de l’Écluse à la pointe de la Malouine est l’une de nos promenades balnéaires préférées en Bretagne. L’air marin vivifiant, les vues imprenables sur la côte et cette sensation de tranquillité, où il n’y a que vous et les vagues.

Conseil : vérifiez les horaires des marées avant de partir, car la marée haute est spectaculaire et donne une impression de proximité. La marée basse ouvre le littoral et apporte un calme instantané.

Simple, magnifique et toujours enrichissant.

🇬🇧 Yay, it’s February!

The in-between month where spring starts to feel possible. Longer days, a hint of lightness in the air and the perfect excuse for a slow wander.

We always start with Dinan. In February, it feels like you almost have the town to yourself. The streets are quieter, the atmosphere softer and there’s no sense of rushing anywhere. It’s the perfect time to wander at your own pace and really notice the details, the stonework, the buildings, the little things you miss when it’s busy.

If you’re feeling energetic, start with Rue du Jerzual. It’s steep (no denying that), but it’s a great way to warm up on a cool day and work off a few lingering Christmas treats. Take it slowly, stop often and look around as you climb.

The history is everywhere and sharing it with someone makes it feel even more special 💕

🇫🇷 Youpi, c’est février !

Le mois intermédiaire où le printemps commence à se faire sentir. Les journées s’allongent, l’air est plus léger et c’est l’excuse parfaite pour flâner tranquillement.

Nous commençons toujours par Dinan. En février, on a presque l’impression d’avoir la ville pour soi. Les rues sont plus calmes, l’atmosphère plus douce et personne ne semble pressé. C’est le moment idéal pour flâner à son rythme et vraiment remarquer les détails, les pierres, les bâtiments, toutes ces petites choses qui passent inaperçues quand il y a beaucoup de monde.

Si vous vous sentez en forme, commencez par la rue du Jerzual. Elle est raide (c’est indéniable), mais c’est un excellent moyen de s’échauffer par une journée fraîche et de brûler quelques calories accumulées pendant les fêtes de Noël. Allez-y doucement, arrêtez-vous souvent et regardez autour de vous pendant que vous grimpez.

L’histoire est partout et la partager avec quelqu’un la rend encore plus spéciale 💕.

January skies in Brittany don’t shout, they surprise. As winter light fades, soft pinks and purples glow over the River Rance, reflecting in the still water below. Quai du Val sits peacefully by the river in Léhon, a calm winter evening that reminds you how quietly beautiful this part of Brittany can be. A moment we were happy to capture before the light faded.

A Perfect Winter Day in Rennes: Markets, Lunch & January Sales

Winter days in Brittany have a rhythm of their own, slower, calmer and often unexpectedly lovely. This day was one of those days that just flowed. We took some friends who had never been to Rennes and headed there in the car with a loose plan: market, lunch, wander. The weather was classic January with sunshine, showers and dramatic skies, but we were lucky and caught more sun than rain, which always feels like a small victory at this time of year.

🇬🇧 Just along the coast from Saint-Lunaire lies Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, a village that feels wonderfully timeless in winter. Once home to Impressionist painters like Signac and Renoir, Saint-Briac still has that same artistic charm, winding lanes lined with stone cottages, hidden courtyards and sweeping views of the sea at every turn.

In the quieter months, the village takes on a peaceful rhythm where the light shifts constantly over the water and fishing boats rest quietly in the bay. The walk around the headland offers beautiful views towards the islands and if you visit around sunset, the sky often glows in rich golds and soft pinks, reflecting off the sea and giving everything a dreamlike quality.

Even in January, Saint-Briac feels alive with colour, calm and a quiet kind of beauty that’s unmistakably Breton.

🇫🇷 Juste à côté de Saint-Lunaire, sur la côte, se trouve Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, un village qui semble merveilleusement intemporel en hiver. Autrefois résidence de peintres impressionnistes tels que Signac et Renoir, Saint-Briac a conservé son charme artistique, avec ses ruelles sinueuses bordées de cottages en pierre, ses cours cachées et ses vues imprenables sur la mer à chaque détour.

Pendant les mois les plus calmes, le village adopte un rythme paisible, où la lumière change constamment au-dessus de l’eau et où les bateaux de pêche reposent tranquillement dans la baie. La promenade autour du promontoire offre une vue magnifique sur les îles, et si vous vous y rendez au coucher du soleil, le ciel se pare souvent de riches tons dorés et roses pâles, qui se reflètent sur la mer et donnent à tout un aspect onirique.

Même en janvier, Saint-Briac est animé par des couleurs, un calme et une beauté tranquille qui sont indéniablement bretons.

🇬🇧 On a bright winter’s day, take a trip to Saint-Lunaire, a charming seaside village just half an hour from Léhon. This elegant little resort has a calm, timeless feel in the cooler months, pastel villas, quiet streets and sweeping beaches that stretch out under a pale winter sun. From the main beach, follow the coastal path out to Pointe du Décollé, a dramatic headland that juts out into the sea.

The walk offers spectacular views across the Emerald Coast, where rugged cliffs meet the turquoise waters below and small rocky islands rise out of the waves. There’s a stone lookout and a large cross at the point, making it an ideal spot to pause and take in the scenery, especially when the late afternoon light glows golden across the water.

Bring a camera or simply stand and listen to the rhythmic crash of the waves; it’s one of those places that feels wild and peaceful all at once.
