The gite is a former barn which has been renovated to create a contemporary 3 bedroom gite. The original barn doors have been replaced with a wall of glass allowing natural light to flood in to the main foyer. Changeover day tomorrow so everything is packed up in bags that are sitting in my hallway. Fingers crossed it will be a smooth changeover and I’ll be ready to welcome my new Dutch guests from 4pm onwards. Hope I haven’t forgotten anything. 😁

Coutances has excelled itself this year with the themed public garden. It’s fun to see and the theme changes each year. The centerpiece is always the highlight and has previously featured a 2CV car, a book, a bee, a spitfire plane and a popcorn cart. This year the theme is based on a tour of La Manche featuring towns and tourist attractions from around the department.

I had a guided visit in part of this château last week. It’s about 90 minutes from the gîte in Calvados region. The château de Fontaine-Henry dates from the 13th century and has one of the tallest castle roofs at just under 15 meters tall. The nearby chapel was the original castle. The castle has never been sold as ownership by various families over the centuries has been through marriage and very often via the female line. I had lunch at an Italian style pizzeria in the village of Thaon which is just a few minutes away. The tiramisu was amazing.

This was utterly delicious! Fresh from the yellow boulangerie in Gavray and a new addition to their cake selection. It’s a speculoos macaron. The macron was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and sandwiched together with two types of speculoos cream. A caramelised ginger piece of heaven.

It's 81 years ago today that forces led by British, American and Canadian commanders invaded Normandy at the start of Operation Overlord. By the end of August, France had been liberated although the losses were immense. 22,442 personnel under British command are honoured at the British Normandy Memorial. And throughout Normandy there are reminders in cemeteries and on memorial plaques of the other nations who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

A visit to the Christian Dior museum today to see the outfits, perfumes, shoes, handbags and accessories. The museum is open until 2nd November. Many thanks to the museum for such a warm welcome and for the free tickets that can be reserved on the first Sunday in each month.
