Tuesday night jousting tournaments and fire juggling, Saturday night barbecues and other events at Chateau Lagarde - ten minutes from us by car and an ideal place to go on the night you arrive.

Summer is here, and it's time for our first summer update "France is open as normal" post. Summer evening food markets have restarted; all the sporty tourist activities are up and running; the Tour de France is making it's way around europe heading for us on the 19th July, and there is plenty of ice cream to go around.

Here is the first monthly 'what's on from Mirepoix tourist office', a bit shorter than usual but it confirms that Mirepoix Thursday night markets are on, as are Saturdays in Lagarde. Leran is cancelled on Fridays, but Puivert night markets on Wednesdays start this week.

Well, 2 months since lockdown started lifting in France, and there is no 'second wave' so far. Back at the beginning of May, France was having on average 1000 new cases per day, now, as of 1st July, the number is about 500 per day (Source:https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/europe/france-coronavirus-cases.html) (UK numbers for the same dates are 4000 on 1 May and 800 on 1 July)

So lockdown in France continues to lift, European borders are now open and we hope that by the end of the week all parts of Britain will have removed the 14 day quarantine period. Bookings are reopening for the ferry, chunnel and (to a lesser extent) the airlines.

For those of you travelling down to us and planning a half-way stop, most hotel groups are open but beware that some groups show all their hotels as 'open' on their central booking site and will let you book, but in fact some of their locations are still closed - check with the specific hotel you are planning to use.

Tomorrow, 15th June, France reopens it's borders to tourists from Europe - Including the UK. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france. The French government is currently asking UK travellers to follow a 'voluntary' 14 day quarantine but no one seems to know what 'voluntary' means so we will see how that plays out over the coming weeks!

Still no new cases in the Ariege since May 21st, and only 2 since 24th April.

You may already know, as it's all over the international news, but bars and cafes in France have reopened as of this morning. Obviously, this is under-covid-19-in-2020-reopening, so you can expect to be sitting outside only, probably with enough space between you and the next table to park a bus, but hey, it's a reopening!

You are also now allowed to drive where you like in France without a document! Wow, it's almost normal... now, where did I put my mask, gloves, gel...

Small 'green shoots' of a post-corona reopening here in the Pyrenees, and green has to be the right word!

As of yesterday all mountain lakes have reopened, this means that the mountain car parks are open and walking is back on and all 'Activities de plein nature (APN)' or outdoor activites - canoeing, paragliding, horse riding, fishing etc are allowed provided the 'social distancing rules' are observed. Road cycling restarted back on the 11th May.

In the centre of Mirepoix this afternoon there was an orderly queue for hand made ice-creams at the 'Hypothecaire', and about 20 people enjoying the sun. All restaurants are still closed, but at least in this corner of the Ariege everyone seems to be behaving and we have had no new cases in our department since the 24th April.

The hills are beckoning...

Latest news from the French Prime Minister and his team last night:
- From May 11th French people are allowed to travel up to 100km from home when lockdown partially lifts.
- This will be reviewed at the end of May with a hope to reopening borders during June.
So we (and the French tourist industry) are still hopeful of normal travel across Europe by the time July and August arrive.
