A sweet with 600 years of history behind it. 🤍

The Calisson is Aix-en-Provence's most famous export: a diamond-shaped confection of candied melon, almonds and orange peel, topped with a thin layer of icing, said to date back to a royal wedding in the 15th century.

In Aix, at the Calisson-Museum, you can watch the whole process at close range, from the almond paste to the final glaze, and leave with a box (or three) of your own.

Wool, cheese and mountain know-how. 🧶

Autumn in the Queyras means the flocks are back down from the high pastures, and with them comes some of the best tomme and bleu cheese the Southern Alps produce, alongside a tradition of wool crafts passed down through generations of shepherding families.

Visit a farm, meet the makers, taste the cheese at the source. It is a side of the mountains that has nothing to do with skiing and everything to do with a way of life that has barely changed in decades.

Made in the Sud, quite literally. 🐑

For many in the US, this weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. But here in the South of France, the season is really just changing gear, not ending.

A whole month dedicated to Provençal flavour. 🍅

The Ventoux Saveurs Festival returns for another edition beneath Mont Ventoux, bringing together winegrowers, farmers and local producers for tastings, guided hikes through vineyards and orchards, and open-air markets that celebrate the harvest season at its peak.

It is one of the best ways to meet the people behind the produce that fills Provençal tables, set against the backdrop of the region's most iconic mountain.

A village built to be a fortress. 🏰

Entrevaux looks almost unreal: a medieval town squeezed onto a rocky spur above the Var river, ringed by ramparts and crowned by a citadel designed by the military engineer Vauban, reached by a steep zigzagging path with sweeping views at the top. ⛰

Cross the drawbridge, wander the narrow stone streets, then climb to the citadel for one of the best panoramas in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

History does not get much more dramatic than this. 🗝️

Here is a well-kept secret: September and October might be the best months to visit the South of France. ✨

The sea is still warm from summer, the light turns golden earlier in the day, restaurant tables are easier to come by, and the coast gets its quiet back.

Visiting outside the peak weeks does not just make for a better trip. It helps spread the crowds more evenly across the year, and that is good for the places we love, too.

The grapes are coming in. 🍇

Across Provence, the vendanges have begun, and nowhere feels it more than the coastal vineyards around Bandol and Cassis, where vines grow almost within reach of the sea.

Some estates open their gates during harvest for tastings and cellar visits, a rare chance to see (and taste) exactly why this stretch of coast has been producing wine since the Ancient Greeks first planted vines here.

Few experiences capture the Provençal art de vivre quite like it. 🍷

Every autumn, the mountains empty. 🐑

Across the Southern Alps, shepherds bring their flocks down from the high summer pastures in a tradition known as transhumance, sheep bells echoing through valleys that have followed the same rhythm for centuries.

It is a moving thing to witness: hundreds of sheep moving as one, dust rising, dogs working the edges, shepherds who know these mountains better than anyone.

A living piece of Alpine heritage, still happening every year. ⛰️

Two islands, one abbey, zero cars. ⛵

A short boat ride from Cannes, the Lérins Islands feel like another world: Sainte-Marguerite, wooded and wild, once home to the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask, and Saint-Honorat, still farmed by monks who have lived there since the 5th century and make their own wine.

No traffic, no crowds, just pine trails, quiet coves and centuries of history in the salt air.

White horses, pink flamingos and horizons that never end. 🦩

The Camargue is unlike anywhere else in Provence: a wetland wilderness of salt flats, rice paddies and lagoons, home to wild horses, black bulls and one of Europe's largest colonies of flamingos.

Explore it slowly, on foot, by bike or on horseback, and keep a respectful distance from the wildlife that calls this fragile landscape home.

It is a different side of the South, and just as unforgettable as any coastline. 🐎
